Jewellery & the senses: smell is incredibly important for us, and so it comes as no surprise that it also forms part and parcel of jewellery! Jewellery and scent are closely connected: many jewellery pieces contain fragrance one way or another.⁠

But that aspect is often overlooked, simply because fragrance disappears after some time...so how are we to remember this beautiful capacity of jewellery?⁠

Two amber beads, found beneath the ziggurat of Assur (in current-day Iraq) and buried there around 3,500 years ago. The amber came from the Baltic region: trade networks reached far and wide.
On view in the spectacular Bronze Age exhibition in the National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden.

Silver anklet of Ethiopian Christian women. In the excellent exhibition 'Hew Locke: What have we here?' in @britishmuseum, where we also learn that this particular pair was looted on April 13, 1868, in Maqdala.
