Years ago, I lent a bunch of my Jehovah's Witness books to a prof and never got them back. I miss them. Not because of the words, but because of the art. I don't know what JW art is like these days, but it was primo surrealism when I was young.

I loved the paintings of Daniel's acid trip, and of all the wild shit in the book of Revelation. I thought the Whore of Babylon riding the beast was sexy. IIRC, she was a redhead with a lot of makeup and a glass of red wine. She was all kinds of fancy. I wanted a multiheaded beast to ride, too. How awesome was that?

I remember there was one painting of a beautiful Black woman in a furry bathrobe in one article about how it was ok to be sexy with your husband. I remember thinking she was gorgeous. That might've been my first inclination I wasn't straight. Go figure. My first pinups were from JW literature. Hilarious. #ExJW #JehovahsWitness #queer #surrealism

I was reading the second Richard Evans book in his Third Reich trilogy and I learned that the Jehovah's Witnesses were literally the ONLY ones who resisted worshiping Adolf Hitler while in the camps. They would literally rather DIE than do that, believing that Jehovah was the only one worth worshiping. Indeed, their zeal was so focused and perfervid that even Himmler held this up as an example of loyalty to the SS.
