International Jazz Day

This semester at @hs_osnabrueck I led an ensemble taking a closer look at queer jazz musicians and composers throughout jazz history and playing their songs. Unfortunately, our singer @merlethordis got sick ❤️‍🩹 and I jumped in last minute to sing this arrangement of Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" that our pianist #juliusholzenkamp made. 🎶🎤

If you know any teens nervously starting in a school jazz band, I highly recommend this. These young actors signed up for these roles with no prior music training (one knew recorder iirc, she stands out), their learning is real as are the very clever methods used to accelerate their musicianship, and to prove it, the band did a promo concert tour when the film was released.

I see the #Toronto University Settlement have posted a call for a "Music & Arts Group Teacher: Jazz Ensemble", a program they had started in the 1920's but had let lapse in the 70s

One year ago today, the jazz world lost its beloved bebop maestro Barry Harris. In October 2019, Chester wrote about Barry during his annual week-long stint at the Village Vanguard, including what would turn out to be his last ever set there. #BarryHarris #bebop #jazz #jazzeducation

Barry Harris at the Village Vanguard - cultured nyc

How early do you have to arrive to be the first in line at the Village Vanguard? I found out last weekend, two nights in a row. The first set at the Vanguard starts at 8:30, and the doors open at 7:30. On Saturday night, we gambled that 6:45 would be early enough. And it … Continue reading "Barry Harris at the Village Vanguard"
