Recently, several Pakistani social media accounts circulated false claims about an alleged ISKP Eid gathering in Faryab province, Afghanistan. These claims were accompanied by photos purportedly showing ISKP supporters in and around a mosque. Afghanistan International also reported on the images, noting that they were unable to verify the location or timing.
However, it is evident that ISKP’s current presence in Afghanistan is limited to scattered, covert hideouts, which the Taliban target and dismantle upon discovery. Given these conditions, it is highly unlikely that the group could organize a large public gathering of this nature.
Upon closer examination, the photos in question were traced back to Eid al-Adha in August 2019. The original images, some of which I have compiled into a collage, include Hijri calendar date and markings associated with Islamic State’s official media channels, confirming their earlier origin. ISKP has not maintained a significant presence in Faryab; its Jawzjan network was eliminated by the Taliban in 2018.
