Do they take a stand when Vispero Restricts a critical feature of Jaws 2026? No Why because they are kissing their back side! If this were apple, Google, or Microsoft that did it they would be all over them. If you are going to hold one company to a high standard you fucking hold all companies to that standard! The NFB is not for all users! They don't care about all blind people! If other high profile blind people have came out against Vispero why the Fuck hasn't the NFB? Is it because someone used to work for Vispero and doesn't want to be critical should they ever want a pathway back to the company? Is it because years ago the NFB advised states to vote for Freedom doing a screen reader and not having Microsoft do a built in screen reader? Is it because Vispero is in the NFB's back pocket? We'll never know! What I do know is the NFB is not for all! I most likely will not be renewing my Jaws home annual license when it ends in 2026. When you have one of the greatest software developers resign because of What Vispero is doing it says a lot. Today is a very sad day for me, since after nearly 32 years, it’s the first day that I’m no longer working on the JAWS screen reader.
I’ve voluntarily resigned my position at Freedom Scientific/Vispero because I found myself unable to continue working for a company that’s changing in ways that are moving away from my personal values.
As recently as the 2025 NFB convention, I was thinking that I’d be working on JAWS far into the future. Much to my surprise, a recent influx of new Executive leaders and customer facing product related changes convinced me that it was time to leave.
I leave behind a group of smart and passionate colleagues, and products which are the best in class. It’s been a great journey, and I thank all of you who have been users of Freedom Scientific software for some or all that time.
Yes, I’m retiring, in the sense that I’m of retirement age and not actively seeking another job. But I’m resigning in the sense that I felt I needed to take a principled stand.
I will continue doing my part to improve the state of accessibility. What that will look like will evolve over time. I'm not surprised to not make AI page describer available for home annual users is a mistake. I think Freedomscientific could care less. I'll be switching to a Mac. Is it perfect? No but it is developed by a company that cares. To Vispero whoever made this decision to not make this available to home annual users should be fired! At the very least The Home annual users should've had a pathway to upgrade to the feature. Robin FrostHey @DavidGoldfield a while back, I began creating an Excel spreadsheet of all #BrailleSense commands for #JAWS. I’ll be getting my unit back from repair on Saturday and would like to continue to add to this list. The problem is, I can’t find the list in the Jaws keyboard manager. I have installed #Jaws2026. Any hints as to where I might look? Both FSCompanion & Gemini tell me to either consult the user manual or contact the manufacturer. I've tried both but neither were very helpful.
