The Importance of Small Business Saturday

Jarratt, VA, USA - For the People: Keeping you up-to-date with official information - local elections are key in 2024!

There are things in life for which one must be thankful, and one of them has to be free will.

Taking a chance, JarrattVA.fyi has a Facebook page (among other social media notions) now, and we recently posted an "event" to promote awareness of what is going on this Thanksgiving Week in the Town of Jarratt, Virginia.

Namely, the change of trash pickup from Tuesday and Friday (the usual schedule, which has not been touched in over twenty years) to merely being on Wednesday, November 27th.

Sure, let's ALLOW pre- and post-Thanksgiving foodstuffs to rot in the outside bins from the middle of Wednesday until the following Tuesday when the regular schedule will return.

Sure, let's NOT place flyers at every household in the town limits a week in advance to make CERTAIN everyone is aware of this change.

Sure, let's NOT have the notice placed in the local newspaper (now online-only) to help reach out to the townspeople.

Sure, let's NOT bother placing a flyer at the local post office.

Sure, let's only place it:

1) on the official town website [11/21]*,
and
2) on an UNOFFICIAL "town" Facebook page [11/25]** that is not actually followed by every single member of the Town of Jarratt.

You cannot tell me it is followed by every single member of the Town of Jarratt, as it only has 217 followers*** - and a large number of them are not residents.

So, yes. JarrattVA.fyi put a few dollars in the pot to allow their "event" to be turned into an informative ad within an 8-mile radius of the Town of Jarratt.

That's the minimum span that Facebook allows ads to be displayed when targeting a small audience, and we don't actually live there - therefore we cannot advertise it as "to local area," sadly.

At any rate?

I can at least try.

And I can let everyone who doesn't know about the idiocy understand that

-- the closest dumpster site on the Greensville County side of the town will be open on Saturday, November 30th, from 7am until 7pm, and

-- the closest dumpster site on the Sussex County side of the town's schedule is currently unknown.

I will be rectifying that soon enough, as long as the people in Sussex haven't gone home for the day just yet.

At any rate....

....this town is worth spending my free will on, trying to help it any way we can - within reason.

*** Town of Jarratt, Virginia, Census
2020: The Government Census states the Town of Jarratt, VA, has a population of 652; -- 454 of that total are aged 15 years and up:
https://data.census.gov/profile/Jarratt_town,_Virginia?g=160XX00US5140536

DataUSA.io, [although it is not an official information distributor for, nor partner of, the United States Census Bureau] reports that the numbers have gone up exponentially since 2020...

2021 = 808
An increase of 156 people.
2022 = 935
An increase of 127 people year-over-year.
A total increase of 283 people in the course of two years.
https://datausa.io/profile/geo/jarratt-va

World Polulation Review, however, believes the CURRENT total is 628 based on projections of the latest US Census estimates released in May 2024 --
A decrease of 24 people in the course of four-ish years.

Regardless? My reason for citing census records should be obvious:

217 followers for a Facebook page does not equal the entirety of the Town of Jarratt, especially when you can see the totals based in the 2020 US government census of persons over the age of 15 is 454.

454 minus 217 (237) does not even equate to everyone in town being a two-adult household and every household having only one of those adults being a follower of said Facebook page.

Call me an over-rationalist, sure.

(Enjoy your week!)

Even though the election results for the Commonwealth of Virginia (USA) are still considered unofficial (thanks, presidential election!), the numbers are in as far as the Town of Jarratt, VA, mayor- and council-elect persons for the 2025-2027 term.

Regardless of the unofficial status.

There will be no recounts, the numbers are there, and there is no way any more mail-in ballots are lingering somewhere.

Technically, all mail-in ballots were supposed to be allowed until the following Friday post-election, postmarked no later than election day, no exceptions, but eh. They do whatever they want, sure.

At any rate, I'm trying to figure out a few very important questions to pose to these individuals via email for public view on the jarrattva.fyi website. My mind is reeling at the possibility of stopping them short with a big DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT PREVIOUSLY ELECTED OFFICIALS statement...

...but, then again, if I don't put that in there? And they spew forth nonsense about previous elected officials rather than what they themselves have done/plan to do?

It means they're politicians - not states-persons. Politicians say whatever and sling mud and tell everyone what they want to hear, whereas states-persons tell you the honest truth.

Sadly, lies are sweeter than honey and no one wants to hear the bitter truth.

That's why we have politicians in government, local or otherwise. :/
