This photo shows two Japanese anemone plants (Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert'), planted at the same time two springs ago. The plant on the right is about to come into bloom. The plant on the left did not produce blooms.

(A flowering sedum is in between these anemones.)

Clearly the slight differences in sunlight and, perhaps, soil, were enough to generate these different anemone outcomes in their third year of growth in this east-facing front garden.
