Final day of #januaryinjapan! (aka #japanuary?) Haneko Takayama is the most recent Akutagawa winner with free work available. She won in 2020 for "A Horse from Shuri", about a museum archivist in Okinawa. Her SF story, Udon—Unknown Dog of Nobody has also been translated into English by LK Nithya.

#JanuaryinJapan begins today! Soseki is sometimes regarded as Japan's first modern novelist. Novels like Botchan, Sanshiro, + Kokoro take up the mixed blessings of modernization and Westernization in Meiji Japan. He remains one of Japan's most widely-read authors. Check out I Am a Cat, chap. 1 👇

Finished my first translated book of the year and it was a surprisingly sensual book about gender out of Japan! I intended to read this book last month, but it ended up being a great book for January instead. This was my first time reading Maru Ayase in any language and I really enjoyed it and the translation too.

For #JanuaryInJapan I'm reading Yu Miri's The End Of August (tr. Morgan Giles). Looking at the size of it, it will last me well past the end of January 😹 (but not August, hopefully).

I loved Tokyo Ueno Station, so have high hopes for this, a generation-spanning exploration of nationhood, family, and what it is to be Korean in Japan (Yu Miri herself is of Korean descent). And I believe marathon running figures prominently, so that's another plus. 😊

One more for #JanuaryInJapan and it's a stylish crime thriller about a pickpocket in over his head called The Thief by Fuminori Nakamura!

This is either the last or penultimate entry for #JanuaryInJapan, depending how the weekend goes, but if it's the last I ended on a winner. The Emissary by Yoko Tawada has quite a sad premise but is still a charming read because of the author's and translator Margaret Mitsutani's unique approach to language and how it changes over time. Don't miss it!
