Helping secure #slavery in the US, #JohnTyler arranged a treaty with the #RepublicOfTexas for annexation. It was signed by #JamesKPolk on #ThisDayInHistory in 1845. He then stationed troops at its claimed border, which was legally Mexican territory, prompting war the next year.

Been reading up on #JamesKPolk today. He had a pretty rough go of it with regards to his own physical health. Take a look at this from the book I'm reading.

He's probably one of the #USPresidents I'm most interested in. He only served one term (through choice), died immediately after leaving office and has an amazing song named after him.

Kind of amazing how fundamental he was to the modern day USA, and yet no one ever seems to bring him up.

I was watching this Speaker battle with interest, and I wondered, why does this guy want to be Speaker? (And also wouldn't it be better if it were really a speaker battle where the candidate with the loudest audio system won?) But anyway I wondered, could it lead to the presidency? So I googled it; James K. Polk was the only Speaker who ever went on to be President. Now I know a lot about James K. Polk, but I didn't know that. What I do know is the set of facts in the TMBG song "James K. Polk". I feel like this was a major oversight, Johns, how could you do this to me!? #tmbg #jameskpolk
