The pink elephant from Jaipur dies five months after the viral shoot: controversy and criticism against the photographer.

A vibrant color, an image that had conquered social media and now a death that opens a debate: Chanchal, a 65-year-old elephant, died five months after being transformed into a “pink elephant” for a photoshoot in Jaipur, India. The event had already sparked global outrage and ignited a discussion about artistic practices involving animals in captivity.

Last February, Chanchal died, five months after the photoshoot by Russian Julia Buruleva, who captured the animal entirely painted pink alongside a model also painted in the same shade. The image quickly went viral on social media and generated contrasting comments between admiration for the visual effect and accusations of animal abuse.

According to owner Shadik Khan and Buruleva herself, the death was due to natural causes related to the elephant’s advanced age. The photographer has always maintained that the paint used was organic, non-toxic, and easily removable, and that the animal remained calm and responsive under the supervision of its caretaker during the shoot. “The project aimed to reflect practices already present in the local culture, where elephants are decorated during festivals,” Buruleva explained.

Controversies and criticism: when art unleashes outrage

Despite the reassurances, the images had provoked a landslide of criticism on social media: “It’s not art, it’s cruelty,” read many comments, while others emphasized that creativity cannot justify risks or stress for animals. The photographer herself denounced threats received following the shoot, even towards her collaborators.

Indian forest authorities opened an investigation to verify compliance with animal welfare regulations, while animal protection organizations are demanding stricter rules on the use of elephants in captivity. The story of Chanchal remains a warning about the delicate line between art and responsibility.
