Jacqueline Wilson calls Picture Imperfect 'the easiest and hardest book I've ever written'

Picture Imperfect follows two sisters who struggle to cope with their mentally ill mother.

Ugh, my worst author #JacquelineWilson is on the radio. I wonder if she's taking questions. I'd ask her why she has a thing for sexualising under 14s.

Janey is a good book!

Anyway, I'm having a bit of a clear out of my screenshots folder, and came across one about our old friend #JacquelineWilson. She was very much against age recommendations on her books.

I wonder why, JACQUELINE? Worried parents won't let their 9 year olds read about your protagonist fantasising about her imaginary teenage mother being raped? Or your 10 year old protag actually fantasising about being molested by a child predator?

F*** YOU, WILSON!

This woman makes me so irrationally angry!

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Age guidance on new Wilson book

Dame Jacqueline Wilson's new book is given a 9+ age rating, despite the author's objections to the age banding practice.

This is the start of my #angrybookthread. A sort of continuation from this post.

While looking up the quote for the above post, I noticed there were still a few #JacquelineWilson #books in my e-reader that I hadn't read yet.

So I picked one: Dustbin Baby, about a girl who was dumped in a bin shortly after birth. And within two chapters, the 14 year old protagonist was fantasising about her school age birth mother being raped, or at the very least, something very close to that. It's not based on anything she's heard about her birth mother, because her birth mother has never been identified. She's just concocted this story behind it herself. So far, there's not even any indication that the mother was a teenager. Yet here she is, imagining in great detail, the story of her teenage mother being raped.

What the actual frick is wrong with this woman?!

And the fact that the one-trick pony #NickSharratt illustrates the covers with childish art that appeals to under 10s. What the hell, man.

I told you this woman has a creepy obsession with the sexuality of school girls.

@blockforest that's not even the worst of it. I seem to remember one where she describes a preteen as sexy. And there was one where a 10 year old girl fantasises about being molested by a dirty old perv. I didn't screenshot most of them though. The Girls series has the childish cover illustrations so kids and their parents think it's okay for 9 year olds, then you have a scene of grown men trying to drug and rape 13 year olds and they're like phew lucky escape, no harm done, let's not tell anyone. Actually, no, Wilson! It's a big freaking deal!!

Honestly, I wouldn't allow Wilson around any girls in my family. Reading her teen fiction as an adult, it's clear that 1. She seems to have a grudge against men and 2. She has a weird fascination with the sexuality of girls under 14 and normalises this. Teen pregnancy is no big deal to her. There's a difference between depicting the dark side of reality and normalising and romanticising it.

@SilverArrows wow I had no idea, she's so universally lauded as well!

@blockforest somehow I missed the worst ones as a kid (except Amber, ugh still grossed out by that, yuck yuck).

I find it strange that she isn't called out for this. People talk about how she deals with heavy issues, but not how badly she does it! She seems to be the media's darling. The only real criticism I've seen addressing the creep factor is in the negative reviews on Goodreads.

If you want to rage, try The Girls series (4 books, not a trilogy, my mistake) and Love Lessons, which I haven't read because I will end up burning the book. The excerpt in the above post is from Secrets. Or just read the 1 star reviews on Goodreads.

Or you can read Joan Lowery Nixon, her books are dumb, but at least there's no child molestation. Or the Babysitters Club, if you want to play Cult Behaviour bingo! 😆

I started snarking ages ago, but never got round to finishing it.

@SilverArrows ha I remember seeing those about - never really appealed to me but the covers certainly brought back some memories!
@blockforest they're terrible books 😆
