Two of our local white-tailed #jackrabbits (again, a species of hare, not a true rabbit) in my backyard today. We had a bunch of snow Tuesday, but that's mostly melted, leaving just the remainders from winter in the shady spots and where there were big piles or drifts.

These two's faces have mostly turned brown, but their bodies are still almost pure white. It's kind of weird; elsewhere in the city, there are jacks that have pretty much turned completely already. It makes these two look like they're a brown hare sitting inside a white fur coat.

They'll be shedding/blowing this coat soon, and will look much trimmer afterwards.

I like their eyes.

"Hey, Marge?"

"Ya, Thelma?"

"I'm not sure our camouflage is working any more."

(The one at bottom-right looks like she could use some hare conditioner...)

They're heeeeeeeeeeeere ...

Seriously, this is what I see out my front window every night in the winter. Except I was moving and using the blinky-light box when I took this, so they're looking around and trying to figure out how to react to me.

Normally they're all just sitting upright, and all looking directly at me. I'm not kidding.

Last one for tonight.

A study of the argy-bargy behaviour of #jackrabbits. They're solitary and territorial, so when they get together like this, there's the rabbit/hare equivalent of pushing and shoving that goes on. Nobody here gets hurt, so it's interesting to watch.

An #action shot from today. There's six #jackrabbits in the front yard in this one, and getting them crammed in like this results in territorial behaviour.

The three across the center of the frame, from left to right are:

1) "Boxing" the one in the middle.
2) Jumping straight up in the air to escape the boxing, since there's basically another jackrabbit in every other direction. He's a good 50-60cm in the air here, and went higher before coming down.
3) Preparing to rear up, possibly taking up the boxing challenge of #1.

The other three aren't in the thick of it yet.

I mentioned that #jackrabbits / #hares are solitary and territorial before. As they are cute little #bunnies, some people find it hard to believe.

Here's a short video I shot today. One approaches another, and they start "boxing" and #grunting at each other (sound up!). This one doesn't turn into anything too bad, but if you get a couple of aggressive ones, it can lead to biting and blood and ... hard to believe, for #rabbits.

Another short video of the white-tailed #jackrabbits (a kind of #hare, not #rabbit, are you sick of this yet?) in my front yard.

Here, there are two facing each other from a short distance away, and eating something from off the ground. They keep a wary eye on each other. When a third approaches, one of the two immediately chases the interloper off.
