Nano-engineered Thermoelectrics Enable Scalable, Compressor-Free Cooling

Researchers at Johns Hopkins APL, in collaboration with Samsung Research, have unveiled a breakthrough in solid-state cooling technology, doubling the efficiency of today’s commercial systems. Driven by the Lab’s patented nano-engineered thin-film thermoelectric materials and devices, this innovation paves the way for compact, reliable and scalable cooling solutions that could potentially replace traditional compressors across a range of industries.

I wonder how long this will stay up. APL tends to be a “Fast Follower” in most areas… #JHUAPL #DEI https://www.jhuapl.edu/culture/diversity

Last week was the annual Lunar & Planetary Science Conference in Houston. Afterward, I was lucky to have a chance to visit Intuitive Machines. This is a full-size model of the company's IM-1 lunar lander, which flew last month. Their third (IM-3) will deliver APL's Lunar Vertex payload to the Moon, probably in early 2025.

NASA Authorizes Dragonfly Mission to Proceed With Estimated 2028 Launch Readiness Date

NASA’s Dragonfly mission team is moving on to the next stage of development on the revolutionary, car-sized nuclear-powered drone it plans to fly over and land on the organic-rich sands of Saturn’s large moon Titan.

Earlier this month, I staffed an overnight shift in Johns Hopkins APL’s Space Simulation Laboratory, where the rover for NASA’s Lunar Vertex investigation has been undergoing a campaign of environmental tests. These assessments ensure the rover will properly function while in the harsh environment of space, both on the way to the Moon and on the lunar surface.

The rover was in one of the thermal-vacuum chambers, seen here: the white tank on the hydraulic lift inside the plastic enclosure. The chamber was at a "cold plateau" that night with no specific tests being run, so my job was simple: Just monitor a few temperature and voltage read-outs!

The team from @LunarOutpost (who provided the rover vehicle) working together with our @JHUAPL engineers have been doing a fantastic job verifying operation of the rover's computers, power/battery system, radios, and the science instruments that it carries. I’m very proud to be working with them. #JHUAPL #LunarVertex #LunarOutpost #Artemis

TFW you sell the first two prints of your DART mission painting, think the buyer’s name seems vaguely familiar, and Google tells you they’re one of the co-investigators of the #DARTmission 😱😱😱

Watch this webcam during regular Pacific time business hours, and you can see people buiilding the Europa Clipper spacecraft in a large cleanroom at JPL. A few days ago, they were working with the Europa Imaging System (the mission's science camera, which was built by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab).
