#Fukushima wastewater release was the first thing I thought... Of course #JGov and #TEPCO immediately chimed in that it was unrelated. Yeah, right... #TEPCOLies has a bad track record, and JGov is perfectly happy to parrot anything they say.

"Thousands of tons of dead fish including sardines and mackerel washed up on a beach in northern Japan, leaving officials stumped. According to Metro, the fish washed ashore in Hakodate on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday morning, covering a stretch of beach about half a mile long. After locals started collecting and selling the fish, officials posted a warning urging residents not to consume the fish.

"Though the exact cause behind the mysterious incident is not known, experts have suggested some probable reasons. There has been speculation that the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant could be the reason."

Hacker group attacks #Japan #nuclear websites over #Fukushima water release plan

August 18, 2023

"International hacker group #Anonymous has launched cyberattacks against nuclear power-linked groups in Japan in protest at the planned release of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, a Japanese IT security firm said.

"Anonymous has been intensifying its cyber offensives since last month, shortly after the #IAEA said in its final report that the planned discharge would comply with global safety standards, NTT Security Japan said.

"'Vigilance is needed, as the attacks could further escalate after the discharge,' a representative of the Tokyo-based firm said.

"The organizations targeted by the international hacktivist group are the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Japan Atomic Power Co and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.

"Anonymous have carried out distributed denial-of-service, or #DDoS attacks, in which networks are overwhelmed by hackers who unleash a flood of data from multiple sources over a short period, with the assault being led by a group based in Italy.

"Activities by a group based in Vietnam have also been confirmed, NTT Security said.

"The Japan Atomic Energy Agency said its website saw about 100 times more than its usual traffic, but users could continue browsing the site as it took countermeasures.

"According to NTT Security, Anonymous released a 'target list' of its attacks after the Japanese government formally decided in 2021 to release treated water from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant.

"In addition to the three nuclear power-related organizations, TEPCO, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Liberal Democratic Party were on the list, NTT Security said.

"A member of Anonymous told Kyodo News recently that the Japanese government's policy to release treated water lacks transparency as citizens were not able to participate in its decision-making process.

"'We must put an end to the senseless act of making the #sea a #dumping ground for economic benefit,' the member said.

"Massive amounts of #contaminated water have been generated in the process of cooling melted reactor fuel after the Fukushima plant was devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

"The water has been kept in tanks after going through the advanced liquid processing system that removes most radionuclides except tritium [AND 62 OTHER RADIONUCLIDES], but the storage vessels are nearing capacity. Tritium is known to be less harmful than other radioactive materials, such as cesium and strontium.

"Local fishermen and some neighboring countries remain opposed to the plan, with China introducing blanket radiation testing on Japanese seafood."

I've been following #FukushimaDaiichi since it happened. #TEPCO has a long history of falsifying records, being deliberately vague, and who knows what else (#IAEA bribery, perhaps?)! Though this article is based in China, the points made are very valid. And yes, corruption and bribery in #JGov are also not unheard of...

"Irresponsible, untrustworthy TEPCO

"Established in 1951, TEPCO accounts for one-third of Japan's electricity generation, with its grid covering Tokyo and eight neighboring prefectures. This industry giant is however infamous for its spotty history. Over the last few decades, issues of misconduct at TEPCO have been exposed by the media including the falsification of safety inspection records of nuclear power plants, and concealing nuclear power plant accidents.

In the data monitoring and treatment of the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water, TEPCO has been widely criticized for the neglect of duty, concealing important information and shirking responsibility.

After the ALPS filter damage incident in 2021, TEPCO representatives admitted that the company had neglected to investigate the cause of the filter failures. TEPCO said it had discovered similar damages on filters two years ago, but it had neither investigated the cause of the problem nor taken any preventive measures other than simply replacing the filters.

"A member of the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority once stated that there were serious problems within TEPCO's management. In addition to the filter damage, TEPCO's attitude is what has fundamentally led to numerous problems. TEPCO should have responded quicker to this accident to minimize the risk of radioactive materials leaking into the environment.

"'The series of falsification issues that have occurred in TEPCO indicate that the company does not attach enough importance to safety, and the data it provides is not trustworthy,' the insider told the Global Times.

"The insider added that there are still many unresolved issues in the decision of discharging Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the sea considering TEPCO's attitude and other factors. In order to ensure that the discharge is reasonable and feasible, and that the impact on the marine ecological environment and human health can be minimized, he urged the Japanese government and TEPCO to carry out the following works..."

#Tepco’s been emphasizing the safety of contaminated water by measuring with incompatible dosimeters

by Mochizuki, #FukushimaDiary, November 3, 2022

"It was found out Tepco has repeatedly been emphasizing the safety of contaminated water by using dosimeters that cannot detect the radioactive tritium and that do not react to cesium unless the concentration level is extremely high.

"Nature of the water to be discharged to the Pacific is the filtered highly-concentrated contaminated water generated by cooling the nuclear fuel that has melted down into the reactor at least twice, and is announced to contain only tritium. Tritium cannot be removed even with decontamination equipment.

"However During the demonstration to the press, a dosimeter that detects only extremely high levels of gamma rays was applied to a bottle containing the contaminated water, which showed no detection. Since July 2020. TEPCO has been repeating this performance to about 1,300 groups and 15,000 people."

Growing Doubts Cast on Reliability of #IAEA Report on #Fukushima #Contaminated #Water Discharge

Posted on July 4, 2023

"...Two South Korean investigative media outlets, Mindle News and Citizen Press, commonly known as grassroots citizen journalism platforms, reported allegations of collusion between the Japanese government and the IAEA. The reports were based on information from an anonymous informant named Jorseti, believed to be an insider at the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

"Jorseti explained, providing evidence in the form of attached photos of the cover and table of contents of a copy of the ‘IAEA comprehensive report on ALPS-treated water at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station’ to support the veracity of his report.

"He emphasized the significance of this evidence, stating that it should not be in the possession of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and expressed concerns about potential collusion between the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IAEA, which could compromise the well-being of humanity in exchange for a €1 million bribe.

"The source further disclosed that Japanese Foreign Ministry officials have been actively searching for a leaker following reports on the ‘conclusion of absolute safety of nuclear contaminated water’ and suspicions of tampering with the final report through #bribery involving the Japanese government and the IAEA."
