Maybe I could buy this super cool but ultimately unsuccessful solar power plant for my moon-cooked hotdog popup.

11 years after a celebrated opening, massive solar plant faces a bleak future in the Mojave Desert

What was once the largest solar power plant of its type in the world appears headed for closure just 11 years after opening. The Ivanpah solar power plant near the California-Nevada border was once hailed as a breakthrough for clean energy, but it's usefulness is under pressure from cheaper solar alternatives. Meanwhile, environmentalists continue to blame the Mojave Desert plant for killing thousands of birds and tortoises. Pacific Gas & Electric says it has agreed with owners — including NRG Energy Inc. — to terminate its contracts with the plant. That could lead to closing two of its three units starting in 2026.

This alien-like field of mirrors in the desert was once the future of solar energy. It’s closing after just 11 years

From a distance, the Ivanpah solar plant looks like a shimmering lake in the Mojave Desert. Up close, it’s a vast alien-like installation of hundreds of thousand of mirrors pointed at three towers, each taller than the Statue of Liberty.

Farewell to Ivanpah, the world’s ugliest solar plant

"#Ivanpah’s concentrated solar technology, which uses sunlight to heat a fluid and generate steam, never worked as well as expected. Meanwhile, solar photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight directly to electricity got super cheap."

Boiling Point: Farewell to Ivanpah, the world's ugliest solar plant

The infamous Mojave Desert power towers will start shutting down next year.

I try to avoid flying, but sometimes I must. And when I do, I like to share the energy infrastructure I see.

Here’s #Ivanpah Power Generating Station (& some desert solar) from the air. I know utility solar is better, but I still think concentrated solar thermal is cool.

I have driven through this part of the desert more times than I can count. I don't recall ever seeing snow in the mountains though. A gorgeous scene of clean skies and clean energy generation.
