Calibro 35 by Calibro 35, released on Cinedelic Records in 2008.

A lesser tragedy of COVID was that my partner and I did not get to see the great Italian cinematic funk band Calibro 35 at the nearby venue The Deaf Institute as planned.

Ended the week and welcomed the weekend with Prisma Sonoro by Alessandro Alessandroni, released on SR Records in 1972.

Undoubtedly one of the central figures of 1960s/70s Italian film music, Alessandro Alessandroni. Renowned for his pioneering reverb guitar sound, sitar exploration, and a phenomenal whistling technique... One of the most desired sessions (and reported to be his own favourite recording) is Prisma Sonoro, a mythical library LP issued..for the highly collectable Sermi label. This music is exquisitely crafted Italian mood music; propulsive Bossa, enchanting Harpsichord melodies, scowling Giallo-style guitars, mournful string arrangements, and the sublimely plaintive voice of Edda Dell’Orso. Long regarded as the backbone of Italian film music, here is Maestro Alessandroni in all his own lush psychedelic glory.

This holy grail was originally released in 1972 on the legendary Sermi Records label (often referred to as SR Records). It features ten tracks composed by Ennio Morricone’s whistler, Alessandro Alessandroni revealing his great talent and unrivaled sense of melody, and two
by the brilliant Italian jazz bassist Giovanni Tommaso, also founder and member of the legendary prog-jazz-rock ensemble Perigeo.

Bioritmi by Egisto Macchi, released on Gemelli in 1971

Genius meld of avant orchestrations, brooding modular composition and electronically processed percussion. Extended and fastidiously sculpted pieces that range from spacious abstractions to tantalisingly ominous melodic interludes and intense propulsive arrangements.Mimicking the pulmonary and cardiovascular actions of the human body, the microscopic landscape of bacteria and the urban heartbeat of bustling cities and electronics, Macchi intriguingly charts rhythm, pulse and biosphere. Moondog in the bloodstream, Phil Glass meets ‘Fantastic Voyage’.
