South African leader accuses Israel of war crimes. Putin and Xi strike more cautious note at meeting
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has accused Israel of war crimes and genocide in Gaza during a virtual meeting of leaders of developing countries including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping. Ramaphosa also condemned Hamas for its attack on Israeli civilians that sparked the conflict and said both sides were guilty of violating international law. Also joining the meeting were leaders and officials from BRICS members Brazil and India, as well as from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, which are set to join the bloc in January. Putin said there is a “humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in Gaza and blamed it on what he called failed diplomacy by the United States.

Israeli protesters block highways, train stations as Netanyahu moves ahead with judicial overhaul
Israeli protesters have blocked highways and gathered outside Tel Aviv’s stock exchange and military headquarters in the latest countrywide demonstration against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned judicial overhaul. Tuesday's latest “day of disruption” came as longtime allies of the prime minister pushed a contentious piece of legislation through a parliamentary committee ahead of a vote expected next week. Additional protests are planned throughout the day in opposition to the Netanyahu government’s determination to pass components of the overhaul plan before parliament’s summer recess.

BALATA REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank (AP) — Yousef Mesheh was sleeping in his bunk bed when Israeli forces stormed into his home at 3 a.m. Within moments, the 15-year-old Palestinian said he was lying on the floor as troops punched him, shouting insults.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government has wasted no time implementing its ultra-nationalist agenda, including adopting a seemingly petty ban on displaying the Palestinian flag and shaking the foundations of Israel’s democracy with a proposed legal assault on the Supreme Court.
