Das Foto habe ich im Februar 1982 in der Rupununi-Savanne in Guyana (Südamerika) gemacht. Wer in Biologie gefehlt hat: Meine damalige Freundin steht vor einem Termitenhügel (Manari-Ranch, östlich von Lethem). (Von mir habe ich vor mehr als einem Jahrzehnt ein ähnliches Foto gepostet.)

Termite mounds reveal secret to creating 'living and breathing' buildings that use less energy

Among the approximately 2,000 known species of termites, some are ecosystem engineers. The mounds built by some genera—for example Amitermes, Macrotermes, Nasutitermes, and Odontotermes—reach up to eight meters high, making them some of the world's largest biological structures. Natural selection has been at work improving the 'design' of their mounds over tens of millions of years. What might human architects and engineers learn if they go to the termites and consider their ways?

El otro día pude presenciar la emergencia de individuos alados de termitas en el alcornocal. Lamentablemente, no vi los vuelos nupciales ni las cópulas ni el típico tándem en el que el macho* sigue a la hembra mientras buscan un lugar donde establecer su nido.
En la península tenemos dos especies: Kalotermes flavicollis y Reticulitermes lucifugus. Los individuos alados se distinguen perfectamente: K. flavicollis tiene el pronoto de color claro (flavicolis) y R. lucifugus es completamente negra.
Fotografiado con una lente acoplada al objetivo de la cámara del móvil mediante una pinza. Había muy malas condiciones de luz; hice tropecientas mil fotos y apenas se salvan cuatro.
