Iran’s leader vows to protect nuclear and missile capabilities | AP News…
Iran’s supreme leader said Thursday that the #IslamicRepublic will protect its “nuclear and missile capabilities” as a national asset, likely seeking to draw a hard line as U.S. President #DonaldTrump presses for a wider deal to cement the war’s shaky three-week ceasefire... #iran #middleeastconflict #unitedstates
Since its creation in 1979, the #IslamicRepublic has revolved around a #SupremeLeader with final authority on all key matters of state. But the killing of Ayatollah Ali #Khamenei on the first day of the war, & the elevation of his wounded son, Mojtaba, have ushered in a different order dominated by commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (#IRGC) & marked by the absence of a decisive, authoritative referee.

Regardless of where you stand on anything else, the #IslamicRepublic of #Iran is a repressive regime that concentrates power in the hands of a small group while controlling and silencing the rest.
This isn’t a matter of opinion. It’s documented by the UN, Amnesty International, and human rights organizations.
The enemy of your enemy isn’t always your friend.
A cease fire reached in the US-Israel war against Iran
At a press conference on Monday, the US president vowed to destroy every power station and bridge in the country during a four-hour bombing campaign. He went so far to threaten to bomb the country back to the “Stone Ages” if they did not agree to his ceasefire deal.
If the regime survives what the president has threatened will be a “complete demolition”, then the US will have reached the limits of what it can accomplish through air power, but also would have done a crime against humanity.
Either he could end the war and leave Iran in control of the strait. Or he can choose to escalate and start thinking about putting boots on the ground. But this would endanger more his popularity in the States.
With the US-Israel war against Iran now in its second month, Tehran’s leadership is urging the Houthis to prepare for a renewed campaign against Red Sea shipping. That’s as its own chokehold on oil and gas deliveries through the Strait of Hormuz has sent global energy prices soaring.
Iran pressed on with attacks across the Persian Gulf hours before Trump’s deadline to agree to a ceasefire plan, clouding prospects for a breakthrough in efforts to end the war. The US president insisted that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz be part of any deal to end the Middle East war and escalated threats to obliterate key Iranian infrastructure if his terms aren’t met.
For many the 8th of April was a good morning with Donald Trump who had announced a ceasefire in the war between the US and Iran. His announcement of a two-week pause in fighting came just moments before the deadline he had given the Islamic Republic to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face the death of a “whole civilisation”.
Donald Trump backed off his threat to unleash devastation across Iran,
Israel and Iran have both agreed to the truce, meaning that Tehran will reopen the strait immediately, as long as both countries halt their attacks. The ceasefire doesn’t cover Lebanon, Israel has clarified.
The US president hailed a new “Golden Age of the Middle East”, calling the truce a “big day for world peace”.
Markets rallied following the announcement, with oil prices plunging nearly 17 per cent and stocks surging.
Demonstrators in Tehran burn American and Israeli flags
Although Tehran has agreed to reopen the strait, the agreement does little to address the reasons why the US went to war in the first place.
Crucially, Iran is still thought to retain its enriched uranium, and has not ruled out producing any more.
Trump started bombing Tehran seemingly with the intention of stopping the world being held hostage by a nuclear-armed “terrorist state”. However, it seems to be in the same position after almost six weeks of war.
Peace talks are going ahead on Friday, but the regime appears to have been left with a stronger hand than it had in the past.
Now it knows it can push up oil prices by choking off the flow of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. If it chooses, it can tighten the screws on the US president again.
Vice President JD Vance will lead a US delegation for direct talks with Iran in Pakistan on Saturday, even as continued fighting in the Middle East — punctuated by intensified Israeli strikes in Lebanon — threatens to derail a fragile two-week ceasefire. Trump vowed to keep US troops in the Persian Gulf ahead of the talks, while Tehran warned there may be mines in a strategic waterway Washington wants reopened. The UK will seek to ensure that Lebanon is included in the US-Iran pact.
Trump threatens to renew war if Iran doesn’t comply with ‘real agreement’US president vows forces will remain in the region in leadup to peace talks in Pakistan, as uncertainty about Lebanon and Strait of Hormuz threatens fragile ceasefireTrump had said the war in Iran would last only a few weeks (max two or three) but it went already in its six weeks, Donald Trump’s war with Iran was somehow shaping up to be the worst foreign policy decision of a short twenty-first century full of them, a ballooning disaster on almost every level, for almost everyone involved, that we should all be thankful now has a chance to end. Whether it actually does, unfortunately, is up to a lot more than the fickle and easily distracted president, who has proven he is very unreliable.
Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday and coming negotiations for a permanent settlement of hostilities was a rare acknowledgment of reality by the president: that the unappealing option of cutting and running while failing to achieve any of the goals he originally set — in fact, making several of the problems the war was meant to solve much worse — is still by far the best option on a menu of garbage.
Very grateful that the threat to bomb civilian targets in Iran did not happen and with at least a temporary cease fire America has pulled back from committing appalling destruction. We continually pray for our brothers and sisters and all their loved ones.
