Started a new construction last night.
'This can't possibly be as difficult as the previous one,' I thought smugly.
'This one's much simpler! It's just some rosettes and decagons!' I continued, confidently.
Guess how it's been going.

The completed pattern, now painted. THis is Pattern 99 from volume 3 of from Serap Ekizler Sönmez's 3-volume masterpiece, 'The Geometric Language of Anatolian Seljuk Art' (Anadolu Selçuklu Sanatının Geometrik Dili)
I do not speak or read Turkish, but the diagrams are excellent*, and an OCR app + Google Translate gets me the rest of the way there.

Serap Ekizler Sonmez's books on Islamic geometry are great fun to work through, because they assume a baseline level of familiarity with geometric construction, so often there are missing steps that I have to figure out myself. Usually I can do that. Sometimes, however, it really does feel like 'draw the rest of the fucking owl'.
I have completed an Art! This is an early 16th century Iznik design modeled from a tile in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, featured as Pattern Study 3 in Esra Almahal's superb book on Islamic Biomorphic patterns.
Holbein gouache (CMY pallette ftw!) on Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper.

I'm not really on IG anymore, because meta, etc., so here's my most recent art! I learned the galaxy-painting technique from a session taught by Lieve Oudejans, and the geometric pattern is #7 from Ameet Hindocha's book '12 Twelves'.
(Please don't judge the geometry too much; I had to paint the lines freehand because if I used a ruler it took forever for them to dry. Also, they didn't show up through the watercolour as clearly as I'd hoped)
Here's my Worldcon schedule! I hope those of you who are interested in such things find something of interest in these things.
I have committed an art.

I'm not really one of the #ArtistsOfMastodon crowd (e.g., I don't take commissions; I don't do it professionally; it's just a hobby), but I do have quite an extensive portfolio of #IslamicGeometricArt , so here is my contribution to #PortfolioDay.
I have committed an art! Constructed this beast back in May but only had the brainspace to paint it this weekend.
