No Peace, Only Escalation: The Push Toward Total War With Iran
April 22, 2026
As ceasefire talks collapse, retired Col. Douglas Macgregor warns that Washington is not negotiating—it’s preparing for a devastating, infrastructure-targeting war that could reshape the global order.
The language of peace still lingers in official statements—but on the ground, the machinery of war is accelerating.
In this stark and deeply unsettling conversation, retired U.S. Colonel Douglas Macgregor joins Glenn Diesen to dismantle the illusion of diplomacy surrounding the Iran conflict. What’s being sold as negotiation, he argues, is little more than theater—designed to calm markets, not stop bombs.
Behind the headlines, a far more dangerous reality is taking shape: a coordinated buildup for what Macgregor describes as a potential “total war” scenario, one that moves beyond military targets and toward the destruction of an entire state’s infrastructure.
If he’s right, the question is no longer whether the war will escalate—but how far it will go, and how much of the world it will drag with it.
A cause for major concern—one that cannot be repeated enough—is this warning from Macgregor:
“There was no real path to an agreeable solution—because there was no real negotiation. When the vice president steps out mid-meeting to take a call from Netanyahu, it tells you everything. These aren’t negotiations. It suggests that Netanyahu—not Trump—is effectively calling the shots on whether we go to war.”

Trump reverses ceasefire with Iran: unilateral truce approved after threats, negotiations stalled.
A test of strength for Iran, one of obvious weakness for the White House. On Tuesday evening, United States President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire with the Islamic Republic, which was due to expire today, Wednesday, April 22nd.
A truce in the fighting without a definite end, with Trump emphasizing, as usual, in a post on his social media platform Truth, that the ceasefire will last until discussions with Iran are concluded “in one way or another,” terms decidedly cryptic.
Trump justified the announcement by saying that at the moment Iran is too divided to negotiate a stable agreement: a consideration confirmed by numerous leaks indicating that the regime is particularly divided internally, with the hardline wing made up of the Revolutionary Guard, the Pasdaran, opposed to agreements with the White House, and the more “reformist” wing made up of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian in favor of a more “conciliatory” line with the United States.
In any case, it is a unilateral move by Washington, given that the extension of the ceasefire was declared exclusively by the United States and was not agreed upon with Iran, which throughout Tuesday had waited for an official statement on the second round of peace talks to be held once again in Islamabad, Pakistan, deciding in the end not to attend.
Trump’s choice contradicts the repeated statements of the same United States president, who for days had repeated that the White House would resume heavy bombing of Iran if no agreement were found with Tehran.
On its part, the Islamic Republic reiterated once again its key condition for sitting at the negotiating table in Pakistan: the removal by the Americans of the naval blockade outside the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani called it “a violation of the ceasefire,” emphasizing that as soon as it is lifted “there will be new meetings in Islamabad.”

Dialogare. Quante guerre non ci sarebbero state con cene ben organizzate”.

The glass of peace
Minister Urso says that the negotiations in Pakistan between the US and Iran failed because wine is prohibited there. With a glass of wine, you know, anything is possible. But when will these people stop rambling?

Dear reader, there is no limit to the ridiculous anymore. Urso is a new entry in the ranking of rambling. Compared to Sangiuliano's jokes, this was high culture. The words of Urso, Minister of Made in Italy, on the failed US-Iran peace negotiations deserve to be quoted in full: “The wine was missing in Islamabad, Pakistan. Because once the agreements, and I include also the peace agreements, were signed around a table where wine was the central element, because it created the right climate, that of conviviality and therefore of peace. If there had been wine, the negotiators would have been more aware of what it means to live together in the world, not to prohibit it.” Apart from the errors in Italian (table set, not “banded”) and consecutio (would have been, not “would have been”), it appears that if the Iranians had not been abstemious, they would not have attacked the US: and instead you saw how many missiles on New York, Chicago, Dallas… Anyway, I invite future historians to discover what direct connection there is between Urso and Lollobrigida, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (sic), and especially what the esoteric link is that leads them to repeat the same, identical absurdity. I remind you of Lollo’s words: “How important it is to be at the table, to discuss and reason, to drink a glass of wine. To dialogue. How many wars there wouldn’t have been with well-organized dinners.”
