The Druid Theatre in Galway - how have I never been there??

This article is actually about one of the founders, Garry Hynes; but gives a lot of the backstory to how the Druid Theatre came to be and gives you some idea of the kind of work it does.

I followed a link from an article in the Irish Times in which someone said that the production of Macbeth they have on is the best they've ever seen in their life.

Garry Hynes: ‘My wife was taken from me in the blink of an eye. My whole life’s changed’

The Druid founder has a reputation as a demanding director. But she has mellowed – and theatre is a consolation after her wife was ‘taken from me in the blink of an eye’

1) Last week, we recorded our first #podcast episode in front of a live audience. The subject was #theater in #NorthernIreland. Big thanks to Ryan's Daughter for hosting us, and The Northern Ireland Bureau and Origin Theatre for sponsoring the evening

What was intended to be one episode became two because the conversations proved so compelling.

The first performance of Seán O'Casey's the Plough and the Stars took place at the Abbey theatre on 8 February 1926. The play was well received on its opening night. But on subsequent nights audience unrest began and on 11 February Cumann na mBan and Sinn Féin members rioted at perceived insults to the men who had died during the Rising.
