@jdmccafferty The 'cursing' (in the formal sense of the word) was on display in the disputes between Ruadán of Lorrha and the Irish high-king Diarmait mac Cerbaill, stories about which survive in a variety of sources, both in Irish and in Latin. Of course, these stories should be understood as legendary, and they likely reflect later medieval concerns about the involvement of secular rulers in operations of the Church and, especially, monasteries. Nonetheless, the competitive cursing characteristic of Ruadán is an entertaining feature of the surviving literature about him.
