2) Good article from #RTE detailing the current state of the #IrishHousing market. It seems likely that pricing has hit stall speed with the end of #COVID and the increase in inflation rates

IMHO, an increase in #housing affordability however is unlikely unless the number of units constructed is dramatically increased from ~30k units. I’ve seen various estimates in the past year which range from 40k to 62k.

Good piece from #DavidMcWilliams (sub req) at the #IrishTimes detailing the struggles of 30 something’s, the first children of the #CelticTiger, and how Ireland’s #housing shortage and unsubsidized #ChildCare is making life prohibitively expensive in a time where generations are accruing wealth

David McWilliams: It has never been so expensive to be a 30-something in Ireland

Life has been tough for the people born in the Irish Renaissance, between qualifying for Euro '88 and being knocked out of USA '94

Interesting piece on the need to adopt planning regulations supportive of low rise high density housing. Draws attention to 100 year old regulations which encourage urban sprawl and stand in the way of bringing more housing on line in #Dublin

We are still shackled to century-old planning standards introduced by Lloyd George

Switching to a low-rise, medium density model would be more sustainable and serve the market much better by keeping prices down and offering more choice

The Irish Times

#Ireland has made extraordinary progress in recent decades. 50 years ago the country might have been classified as a developing nation rather than a member of the European Community

Much has been achieved, much needs to be done as David McWilliams reminds us in his latest @irishtimes column (Sun Req) on the housing shortfall

Spurious planning objections amount to anti-social behaviour. If planning guidelines are met, we should build and build

Should Ireland implement a key worker #housing program or are such schemes a way of avoiding addressing deeper structural issues?

Newton Emerson: Britain has been helping to house key workers for two decades. What about Ireland?

It is time to look at subsidising homes for teachers, nurses, doctors

Planning laws to be rushed through Dáil 'to help address housing crisis'

..remember the way ~rushed~legislation for Strategic Housing Developments resulted in an increase in court cases, legal costs & delays..& was actually much worse for developers. That

Mad how Dublin City Council got a “construction cost report” saying it’s €500,000+ to build a 2-bed apartment… when it costs Fingal Council €317,900 #Housing #IrishHousing
Wexford County Council are delivering new 3-bed homes for ‘all-in’ cost of €236,300 👏🏻 .. & that’s the “real cost” (incl VAT, land, fees, utilities, etc) #IrishHousing #Housing

With 35k, #Leitrim is Ireland’s least densely populated. The population now stands at just 35k compared to 155k in 1841, a decline of almost 80%.

Rents are inexpensive relative to the rest of the country, however prices are rising fast and like the rest of the country, there is a severe shortage of housing
