It's tax season in the US, so I purchased and installed #turbotax as usual. I use the desktop client since I'm not too keen on having all my personal financial data stored by a private party in one server.

This year the amount of nagging by #intuit to get me to switch to their online version was through the roof. I had to click no several times during the desktop install and answer a survey why I didn't want to switch after.

The reasons they gave for the online version amounted to: it's easy to switch (assuming I want to), it's secure (yeah right), always up to date (not a big deal to update the desktop app), and I can get expert assistance (I think this is also offered on the desktop app).

Given the amount of hassle I got this year, I could see the desktop version going away at some point. Hopefully there will be other alternatives... worst case I guess I could fill out the forms myself (or hire an accountant) 😬

Filed our #incometax es in #Canada yesterday. While #Intuit is an evil corp, #turbotax does make things amazingly simple - answers everything same as last year assuming nothing has changed, imports all your T4 and T3 and other forms from #CRA 's website automatically, then #netfiles your return. So its "yes, they're evil and its a grift, but the product still _works_ and saves me time."

I just wish we were like #Denmark and #Sweden where the government just files your taxes for you.

For anyone contemplating the new TurboTax offering of uploading your crap and letting someone else do your taxes, it's not ready for prime time.

The experience is super disjointed and prolonged. We got federal plus two states for $150 which is less than it would have been for us to do it ourselves. So, OK it was fine. But if it's more expensive next year than doing it on our own we won't bother.

Honestly, we really should stop with Intuit. It's just another evil megacorp that truly doesn't deserve our money.

And today I finished the annual "if you aren't gonna die you gotta pay taxes" ritual. I've taken over from my wife who had been doing it with TurboTax so I keep that going even though it's a bit pricey. I hate filling out forms and scanning PDFs in is a breeze.

On the minus side, every fourth fucking screen was an upsell attempt for something called MAX.

Every.

Fourth.

Screen.

Come on guys. They also have a few misleading "click this box" places where a purchase is next to an acknowledgement of "yes I read this required verbiage".
