Car Pierre, dentiste à Paris mais habitant une demeure à Milly-la-Forêt, s’efforce d’aider son jardinier Miguel, après la mort de sa femme, avec ses deux enfants de 12 et 10 ans. Lui-même a perdu la sienne, Suzanne, d’un cancer, et ne s’en est pas vraiment remis. Ils n’ont pas eu d’enfants et la marmaille n’intéresse pas le médecin. Mais Suzanne les aimait, ces gosses de jardinier qui vivaient sur la propriété dans la maison du garde. Leur mère, Maria, faisait la cuisine et le ménage, et Miguel, leur père, faisait le jardin et entretenait les bâtiments.

Alors, lorsque Miguel perd sa femme à son tour, d’un brutal accident de la circulation, Pierre se sent solidaire. Le père de famille va enterrer Maria au Portugal et revient pour solder son préavis. Il veut s’installer là-bas – ou du moins il le dit. Mais il ne peut se résoudre à quitter la propriété, depuis des années qu’il est là. C’est devenu chez lui et, lorsque Pierre dérangé dans ses habitudes et réticent à engager un autre couple, propose à Miguel de rester sur les conseils d’une voisine, il y consent avec soulagement.

Mais Pierre est bien seul et, s’il baise de temps à autre la belle Nicole, blonde épanouie et sans vergogne, il est pris à 53 ans d’un retour d’amour paternel. Contrairement aux idées reçues, les femmes ne sont pas seules à désirer des enfants, les hommes aussi. Les liens ne sont pas les mêmes, mais aussi forts. Les sciences neuronales nous apprennent en effet que l’expérience répétée de nourrir, consoler, surveiller, anticiper, protéger, ajuste progressivement les circuits neuronaux de l’adulte selon ces responsabilités assumées. La charge mentale d’anticiper les besoins, de gérer les contraintes quotidiennes, de rester constamment attentif, remodèle l’attention et les priorités. C’est le cas de Pierre, qui fait chaque jour 60 km aller et autant au retour entre son cabinet et sa demeure, rouvre la piscine pour les gamins plus que pour lui, qui se remet au train électrique, qui se préoccupe des difficultés de lecture du plus jeune, Frédéric, tout en félicitant l’aînée, Amalia, de ses bonnes notes. Il est pris par le charme de la vitalité juvénile, ce qui le revigore ; il en besogne Nicole plus encore, tout en n’éprouvant pour elle aucun amour. Les enfants rendent plus soucieux de la vie.

Ce qui a commencé par une entraide envers une famille d’employés fidèles, devient une intrusion progressive dans le rôle familial. Miguel, bas de plafond et mal à l’aise avec les mots, consent à reculons à ce que ses enfants soient accaparés par le maître, jouant et nageant avec lui, allant faire des achats à Paris avec lui, allant à la foire avec lui, couchant dans les chambres d’amis de la demeure et non plus dans le pavillon paternel. Pierre va jusqu’à faire inscrire Amalia dans une pension réputée, où elle pourra révéler ses talents et de faire des relations. Il invite des enfants de leur âge à venir jouer à la propriété et déjeune à la même table, fils d’employé et maître mêlés.

Cette transgression de classe, au début des années 1980 en France, était encore un scandale. Miguel y voit une humiliation. Il n’est pas assez bien pour sa progéniture et se sent évacué de leur vie. Il se saoule, il tente d’interdire, mais ne sait pas poser les limites, faute de vocabulaire et d’idée. Lorsque Pierre, croyant bien faire, décide d’une adoption simple des deux enfants pour leur léguer ses biens à son décès, c’est le drame. Miguel est évincé dans son rôle de père protecteur, de mâle pourvoyeur de biens. On ne lui demande pas son avis et sa rébellion sera terrible. Bien loin de ce que Pierre pouvait anticiper. Comme quoi l’enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions.

Un roman populaire sur un instinct paternel peu souvent traité encore, à l’époque Mitterrand. Dommage qu’il soit trop rapide dans l’analyse et le caractère des personnages, donc superficiel. C’est le travers de Troyat d’écrire facilement ; il ne creuse pas assez ses sujets. Mais le lecteur sera touché de cette attention aux enfants portugais d’un bourgeois parisien que rien ne prédisposait à la générosité.

Weird as it sounds, I think we need an actual law, like some kind of bill of rights, that says you can't notify me on my phone without offering me highly fine-tuned control of each kind of message.

Notifications intrude into my life. Sometimes my phone is on waiting for emergencies or other high-priority issues while I sleep. If a friend wakes me, I can have them dialed up or down in priority.

But Android is designed so Audible won't let me have control of my audiobooks in the lock screen without notifications turned on, yet once I've done that, Audible has no compunction against advertising new book releases in the middle of the night via notifications. I should be able to get cash compensation in court for that.

And my USB-C cable, once I plug it into my Android phone insists on randomly popping up an utterly inscrutible notification saying "you need to log in if you want to see notifications", or some such, and then when I do there is no notification to see. It was just random.

And Android Auto likes to give me two completely pointless notifications, one when I plug my phone into the car and one saying Android Auto is available. The first one I don't need a notification about because I just plugged in my phone. But more importantly, the second one is a lie. Android Auto MIGHT be available and it confirms nothing. The handshake may have been done wrong, so all it tells me is the thing I know already, which is that Android Auto is on the phone. But I might have to pull the plug and replug it to be properly connected. So the notification is worse than pointless and just floods my screen with stuff I don't care about that appears to need immediate attention. And then Android asks, as soon as I disconnect it, how my experience was. I always say "Bad" because part of my experience is getting asked that pesky message that I do not want and would happily say "never do this".

These all seem like technical problems, but they are not. They are reminders that we no longer control our lives, that companies can, at a whim, intrude into our lives with pointless rituals that whittle away our existence. I'm not being metaphorical when I say we need laws on this. I absolutely mean that if we don't write strong law on this, it will only get worse. Or we need to enforce the 4th Amendment on a theory, like Larry Lessig has effectively said in the past, that programmatic code is effectively a kind of government that binds us and our choices in life as surely as legal code does.

But what DO we get laws about? Having to login to use an operating system so they can track us better, know who we are and where we are at every moment. We need laws against such laws.

Every time I visit Facebook, I get re-introduced to Manus, my new AI helper. I suspect that Manus can post innocuous messages for me so that I don't have to visit regularly. Nifty, if Manus can continue to handle the task ten years after I'm dead so that the ad revenues keep rolling in. Perhaps there is a story idea somewhere in there: a story I can write without AI help or intrusion.

Rengay?

Rengay is a form of linked verse created as an alternative to Japanese renga or renku. The form was devised by Garry Gay in California in 1992. A rengay consists of six thematic haiku verses and is normally composed by two or three poets, although solo and six-person rengay are not uncommon.

This form actually requires a bit of explanation, so I recommend that you read about it HERE.

A personal note

This rengay feels different to me. It’s the first one I’ve written with a friend I know in person, someone who lives just down the street from me in Jerusalem. That proximity adds a layer of shared space to our collaboration. For me, it seems to echo the poem itself, where the line between inside and outside is never quite stable.
