Don't let people know they are intersex, they'll turn gay. This was the whole rationale for surgery-at-birth and secrecy-for-life.

As a young trans person in the stone age before the internet, I was relieved to meet a small group of trans women. I had allies in my transition! But I was also different to them. They said I was "a natural" - aside from my voice, my face and body was really passable. I only needed a little electrolysis on my face. I was so lucky.

From my side, I saw how they had managed to fit into the male sphere successfully. Maybe I had a "lucky" body, but I felt their path was more valid - they had succeeded as males, and chosen despite that to be their authentic selves. I felt like a failure looking for a way out.

Learning I am intersex started with my very earliest memory (of genital surgery as a toddler), but it took five decades to actually say I am intersex, and even now I still struggle with it.

Desire is desire but it doesn’t have a name, just as many possible forms and expressions as it can take. Eventually, we reach the Deleuzian conclusion which was a quote I actually used in a previous book: 'It is no longer about being a man or a woman, but inventing sexes.'”
