American Task Force on Lebanon: "On #InternationalHumanRightsDay, the fall of the regime in #Syria is a reminder to all victims of oppression in the region and beyond that freedom and accountability can prevail. Today is #InternationalHumanRightsDay .
Just on the afternoon two days ago, Guangzhou Metro suddenly began to enforce extremely strict security checks at the entrance of every station like the ones used in airports. Every single bag was required to be scanned and every single passenger was subject to searches with hand-held metal detectors. Soon, hundreds of passengers queued outside the entrance while few people were on the trains, essentially causing a gridlock. Such a measure led to a huge backlash from passengers; on the morning of the following day (9 December), passengers ignored security workers and rushed into the station. They could no longer bear the delays that made them late for work. Guangzhou Metro stopped enhanced security checks later that day, but the checkpoints remain as they have always been there for years.
As of December 2024, China is the only country in the world that imposes regular security checks on all passengers on rapid transit systems. Luggage scanners can be seen at the entrance of every station and passengers are expected to have their bags scanned. They are also asked to drink the water or beverage inside plastic bottles to show that it is not petrol. Since the COVID pandemic, security measures have been tightened, with metal scanner gates added in many cities and all passengers have to walk through it.
Before 2008, there were no routine security checks at metro stations. Yet they have become common since then. Most security checks were only loosely enforced, but images of passenger bag scans have been leaked to the internet all the time.
To this day, none of the city councils that are involved has shown any concrete evidence that routine security checks work. The fact is probably the opposite: it makes the crowd move slower, thus reducing the efficiency of the metro system.
