Stargazing isn’t always easy in the city, but there are dark sky preserves across Western Canada that are protected from light pollution. #InternationalDarkSkyWeek

Looking for the Stars in Western Canada

It can be hard to spot the stars when you live in a big city surrounded by a bubble of light. Fortunately, there are a number of places where a real effort is being made to protect the dark. Here’s where they are located in Western Canada.

The night sky from your window

Cancelled flights, and less commercial and industrial activity during lockdown are reducing air and light pollution around the world, leading to spectacular views of the night sky. To mark this year’s International Dark Sky Week, we bring you the story of ERC grantee Minna Palmroth who, together with a group of Finnish amateur stargazers, has discovered a new kind of northern lights.

@sharongascoigne That is an absolutely gorgeous shot. Thank you for sharing it.

We stayed this week in a cabin high up a mountain in western North Carolina in the #US. Not sleeping, I went out on the deck at about 5AM, and with no moon, the stars were amazing. There was a slight wash of light that I thought might be a cloud, then realized I was seeing stars through it. It was the Milky Way, the first time I've ever seen it.

No picture, but the memory.

Another view for #InternationalDarkSkyWeek

This is #WhitecliffBay on the #IsleofWight photographed during exceptional circumstances.

A new moon so very little natural light, the #MilkyWay in amazing clarity and the #PerseidMeteorShower putting on a wonderful display.

My husband was thrilled to be there at the right time! #LandscapePhotography #astrophotography

Sunflowers at #Arreton on the #IsleofWight under the #MilkyWay

Continuing with the #InternationalDarkSkyWeek theme I've chosen this view for today.

My husband found this to be a tricky shot, trying to find a suitable composition where the #sunflowers aligned with the stars. It did make for quite a sight though!

Apparently there is dark sky week. So I made this.

🦉 “So give a hoot,
don’t light pollute!”

Continuing on with my #InternationalDarkSkyWeek posts here's another of my husband's images taken last year.

The #MilkyWay at #FreshwaterBay on the #IsleofWight

The enormous rock formation that stands out to sea is named Stag Rock. The Island has been put forward as a candidate as a Dark Skies Park. We are so lucky to have little light pollution here.
