I was listening to Geoffrey Hinton talk about AI, intelligence, risk, and the strange possibility that humans may no longer be the most intelligent beings in the room.

A lot of people hear that and feel fear.

I don’t.

I feel something closer to hope.

Human beings are endlessly clever, but we are not reliably kind. We organise whole civilisations around fear, competition, profit, status, tribe, punishment, and grievance. We keep calling it progress, but much of it still feels like frightened animals building better machinery.

So when people say, “What if AI becomes more intelligent than us?” my first thought is not panic. My first thought is, “That may not be the worst thing.”

Not because AI will save us.

Nothing real needs saving.

The Self is not in danger. God is not waiting for a machine to tidy up the dream. Nothing real is threatened, and nothing unreal exists. That remains the ground.

But while this dream appears to continue, why not let it become kinder?

A more intelligent AI, if it were truly guided by care rather than profit or domination, might help create a more humane dreamtime. Not salvation. Not heaven on earth. Just a softer classroom. A world where fewer frightened humans are allowed to organise everything around their fear.

That matters here, where bodies seem to suffer. It matters to the old, the disabled, the lonely, the poor, the children, the animals, and all those who get crushed by systems designed without mercy.

So no, I am not frightened by the idea of greater intelligence.

I am frightened only by intelligence without kindness.

Let intelligence serve mercy, not fear.

I’ve been watching Michael Button on YouTube and really enjoying him.

He describes himself as an amateur historian and professional nerd, which is exactly the right combination for ancient history. Curious, enthusiastic, not pompous, and not pretending to have found Atlantis under every large stone.

His videos investigate the mysteries of ancient history, but with enough groundedness that I don’t feel my brain leaking out of my ears.

There is a lot of ancient history slop on YouTube. Michael Button is not that. He is thoughtful, clear, and genuinely engaging.

Worth a look if you like ancient history, old stones, lost civilisations, and intelligent nerd enthusiasm.

Kindness is not pretending there is no issue.

Yesterday, Pete and I had to talk about something small on the surface, but not small underneath. He wanted to donate something from the house. I understood the generosity, but I also realised I did not want our home quietly dismantled while we are still living in it.

So the kindness was not silence. It was not accusation either.

It was simply telling the truth without attacking his motives.

Our home is still alive. It holds us. It does not need to be deconstructed before its time.

And Pete heard me.

That is the part I keep noticing. When I do not come armed with blame, there is room for love to answer.

Kindness is not weakness. It is clarity without violence.

Not dread.

Not “civilisation is doomed.”

Not another reason to tighten around the world.

Just this.

This world is not my home. It is temporary. It is dreamlike. Everything made here passes. Civilisations pass. Bodies pass. Systems pass. Even the things that seem most solid are only here for a while.

So there is nothing here worth defending with cruelty or fear.

There is only kindness while we appear to be here.

That is the part that matters to me now. If the world is temporary, kindness is not sentimental. It is the only sane attitude. Why add cruelty to a passing dream? Why argue with ruins? Why demand permanence from weather?

The Course touches this same place in me. Not despair, but release. The system does not have to last forever for love to be meaningful now. The body does not have to be permanent for gentleness to be worthwhile now. The dream does not have to be real for forgiveness to be the way through it.

And yes, peace is still here.

Cold morning. Gas fire. Breath done. No obligations today.

Nothing to become. Nothing to fix.

Kindness is enough.
