Yes, 1440p is better for older systems, but if you consider that 2160 = 1080 × 2 = 720 × 3, I think it’s a matter of preference. For example, I also want to be able to play demanding games at 720p or 1080p resolution.

In case somebody asks, that's a 1440x1080 resolution for a 4:3 Aspect Ratio despite having a 1920x1080 screen.
