I think that us using #base10 is suboptimal. #base2 / #base16, #base12 or #base60 would be the better choice - sorry to all the cultures that had to switch. But switching now would not work. Maybe a visit by technologically superior aliens would work.im not sure.

I came across a functioning coder today asking if a kilogram was 1000 or 1024 grams. Yes they did ask, yes they verified, yes they accepted 1000 grams. I swear ten thousand years in the future some fucker will 'oops, black hole!' 'cos they began in comp sci and learned kilo = 1024 first and NOBODY WILL CATCH IT. @slothrop @w7voa I was at SGI from approximately its peak until after the first bankruptcy. CEO Bob Bishop liked to talk, at every allhands, about how changing the course of an established company was slow, like changing the course of a supertanker headed for a beach.

Unfortunately he continued to use the metaphor long after we had ground up on the beach and the tanker had fallen over on its side leaking oil everywhere.

Arrow asks us to look at the innovation question from the point of view of the company as a whole. #ClaytonChristensen's #InnovatorsDilemma looks at the motivations of individual decision-makers in large, successful companies. These individuals don't want to disrupt their own business, because that will render some part of their own company obsolete (perhaps their own division!).

This #CurseOfBigness is why major shifts in big companies are often attended by the return of the founder - think of Gates going back to Microsoft or Brin returning to Google to oversee their AI projects. They are the only execs that other execs *can't* knife in the back.

This is the real #InnovatorsDilemma. The internal politics of large companies make Machiavelli look like an optimist.

Markets demand, yes, but it is also cultural. Companies that manage for continuous improvement and incremental improvements do not make the breakthroughs that demand a long term perspective. The initial Alexa was breakthrough but (I suspect) then Amazon imposed a continuous improvement model.

Innovation is hard, scary, & elusive. Incrementalism is easy, safe, & approachable. For most people, the choice is easy. To compound this, see the #InnovatorsDilemma .
