ล umanoviฤ (1896-1942) is regarded as Serbia's greatest painter.
Educated in Zagreb and Paris, he was originally a Cubist, then experimented with Expressionism and Fauvism, but later developed his own style, still somewhat Expressionistic, but very individual, which he referred to as "the way I know and can."
Settling in the city of ล id in Serbia, he was prolific painter, producing 800 paintings and 400 drawings during his short life.
Toward the end of his life, he was deeply lonely and produced a number of paintings of his hometown under snow, usually with roads leading into the distance, creating a melancholy atmosphere. It's been speculated he was also reflecting the state of Europe at the time, with the rise of the Third Reich, and the sadness he felt at the spread of Fascism.
ล umanoviฤ was killed during the mass genocide of Serbians undertaken by the Croatian Ustaลกe, a revolutionary group that were puppets of the Nazis, and who viewed Serbs as an inferior race. A museum of his life and work now stands in ล id, and he is regarded as a national treasure.
