We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!

Hearts Based #Education and #AntiColonial #Learning in #Healthcare (H.E.A.L) Project is using the #arts to combat #HealthcareBiases.

β€œThe H.E.A.L. #HealthcareProject provides #SystemicChange that is long overdue. I often think about the extractive ways that we talk about #CulturalSensitivity and #CulturalCompetency,” said Nicole Halbauer, H.E.A.L. Healthcare Project Manager.

The project will use #poetry, #storytelling, and #VisualArts to better understand patient experiences with a goal of #humanizing the healthcare system by bringing together #FirstNations #creators and #activists based in #PrinceGeorge.

They will work to create #ArtsBased and #AntiOppressive learning materials for healthcare staff including #nurses and #doctors.

The #FreeLessons will be available on the H.E.A.L Healthcare website.

The program is being organized by the Health Arts Research Centre in partnership with the Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health.

The project is part of the federal government’s plan to create better and safer health systems for Indigenous people with $126.7 million being committed to the project over three years.

We need the #BCgovernment to get the message from concerned communities across B.C. that we must work together and with urgency to #protect #OldGrowthForests and #reform #forestry practices. To do so, the next steps are crucial:

#StopLogging in the most at-risk #OldGrowth #forests, and other #ecosystems identified by First Nations, by providing promised funding for #LoggingDeferrals.

Provide full #FinancialSupport to #FirstNations for long-term #IndigenousLed #conservation solutions, including #compensation for lost revenues and employment.

Move away from the β€œall or nothing” approach common in forestry practices across B.C. and most evident in #ClearcutLogging. In its place, work with First Nations, local residents, industry and other stakeholders to implement forestry practices that prioritize important values like #biodiversity, #habitat, #WaterRetention, #Indigenous #CulturalUse, and #tourism.

Bourque Bearskin & Victoria Dick of #Tseshaht are currently working on creating a #curriculum, β€œfrom the ground up”, called the #Indigenous #Graduate #Education & #Nursing #IGEN program for #UVic.

For Bourque Bearskin and Dick, the work they’ve been doing over the last few years, including the development of the #MastersProgram, is better aligning #healthcare with the principles of #UNDRIP.
