I watched the 1995 crime thriller Hackers for #IndieWebMovieClub and two very interesting movies about "Scientific Soulmates".

There was an eclectic mix of documentaries; one focusing on physical and mental endurance, and one about a mysterious 1970s musical hero. One documentary about a revered sushi chef, and another documenting the life of iconic comedian John Candy.

I watched four shorts, each very unique. I also watched six movies starring Dakota Johnson and four starring Imogen Poots.

Day 1/100 of my 100 day blogging challenge is for IndieWeb Movie Club for October (oops 1 day late) https://crystaltouchton.com/hackers/

Triplets of Belleville

🎬 watched Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003)

Released in USA as Triplets of Belleville, and I’m amused to see in UK and Ireland as a third title Belleville Rendez-vous.

As two film enthusiasts living in Los Angeles, my partner and I do not watch many together at home. We make dates to visit theaters, and share scenes while in motion during monday night fort90 film clubs. Sitting down to our modest projected setup and sorting out the audio was a special event and a treat to itself.

First impressions were such fun on a striking and enchanting ride into a surreal and groovy opening scene. The visual and sound design continued to surprise and delight up to the final car chase scene, where the story lost me in an aversion to excessive gunfire and pointlessly violent car chase. The experience overall far surpassed expectations and is one of the most unique animations I’ve enjoyed in a long time!

It has now been a few weeks since watching and the visual experience stuck with me, especially the repeat views from in front of the lead son rocking back and forth on his bicycle. While searching today for loops of these views, I was also reminded how catchy and happy the overall musical themes are from the triplet stars themselves.

The elder triplets finding and adopting the mother and dog through shared music and frog soup are such a sweet story of tenderness and discovered love between strangers. I found this obscured on first watch between the darkness of the mafia kidnappings and humans as horses on bikes.

This is definitely worth re-watching as there is so much detail in the animation style and scenes I know I missed. I expect to further enjoy the elder triplets story, and the irony of their household instruments. At 1 hour 22 minutes, it’s a quick and other-worldy trip into animation land I’m so happy to look forward to again.

Highly recommended for fans Cowboy
Beebop, Tour de France and cycling culture, cityscapes, Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli, and jazzy grooves.

I watched and wrote about this as encouraged by the IndieWeb Movie Club for July, and a personal endeavor to post. Thanks to Mark Sutherland for this month’s suggestion!

I have posted my review of The Triplets of Belleville that was this month's selection for the IndieWeb Movie Club and selected by Mark Sutherland - https://www.vanderwal.net/random/entrysel.php?blog=2126

This took three writings from scratch and I ended up with this late last night and gave it an edit (I know, unusual) today.

I have a feeling I will be back rewatching this film and thankful for the nudge to watch it.

I rewatched the film in May, and had a mix of remembering my past impressions as well as forming new impressions in the context of 2025. A lot has changed in the past 10 years. Worth a separate blog post.

Tomorrowland

My submission to this month’s IndieWeb Movie Club

Welcome to the May 2025 edition of IndieWeb Movie Club!

As your host for this month¹, I invite you to (re)watch the film “Tomorrowland” (https://movies.disney.com/tomorrowland), with an optional prequel book reading assignment!

“Before Tomorrowland” (https://books.disney.com/book/before-tomorrowland/) was released about a month before the film, so it’s fine to read before watching.

#Tomorrowland is available in various physical media formats, and via streaming on DisneyPlus². 130 minutes, rated PG.

This month is the 10th anniversary of Tomorrowland’s release.

The world was quite different in 2015.

I had my own impressions of Tomorrowland when I first heard about it and then watched it much later (which I won’t link to yet to avoid spoilers or biasing your opinions). The film made such a strong impression on me that I held a group film viewing and discussion party in 2015!

I’m curious how both first time viewers in 2025 and folks watching a second (or more) time think of Tomorrowland.

If you would like to participate in this month’s IndieWeb Movie Club:
* optional: read the prequel book
* watch the film
* blog a read³ (for the book), watch, review, or even a simple note post of your impressions, or some or all the above and link to this post

If you want your post(s) to be included in the May 2025 IndieWeb Movie Club roundup, notify me with a Webmention from your post, or drop a link in the IndieWeb chat discussion channel and @-mention me.

Since this is an IndieWeb community activity, please both follow the Code of Conduct, and also keep your post within the same rating (PG) as the movie. I may curate the roundup accordingly.

Happy reading, watching, and dreaming!
