After twenty years of organising free open source events on meetup.com the continual #enshittification of the platform and the raising of rates has got to the #Inconceivable level of $430/year.
Meetup make it impossible to export an email list of members, or any kind of event history, in an effort to keep your data hostage.
If you cancel your subscription, they'll GIVE YOUR GROUP to someone else. You have to explicitly close the group first, which they make as difficult to do as they can.

I hate to link to Facebook, but this guy, Derek Penwell, has an incredible way of pinpointing feelings during #Inconceivable #crisis.

“The room feels like it does after the sirens stop—quiet, but nothing is okay. We sit with the glow of cable news on our faces. We may not say “collapse” out loud, but our slumped shoulders have already gotten the message.

“We sit, doomscrolling while our stomachs threaten mutiny. We make sure we know where the exits are. We're a people learning how to breathe through constant air raid sirens.

“Let me say it plainly so we can stop pretending: we're afraid, not of losing a news cycle, but of losing the scaffolding that lets neighbors disagree without drawing blood.

“We're afraid of a pattern: power that loves itself, truth filtered through focus groups, memes rehearsing violence until the jokes come true.

“We teeter on despair, afraid the ordinary tools won’t hold when the beams split.

“We police our words, depending on who we’re with. We swallow the lump when someone says, "It can't happen here," because history keeps receipts. We mute the thread and call it rest.
