Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: OTTRS Speaker Series: "AI Teaming in Classrooms: Building Inclusive, Engaging, and Teacher-led Learning Experiences & Environments". After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

Speaker: Noel Kuriakos, Graduate Researcher & Instructor Abstract: This presentation explores the integration of AI agents and assistants in K-12 classrooms, focusing on how these technologies can transform teaching and learning by enhancing various pedagogical approaches and aligning with established learning theories. AI teaming involves AI agents and assistants working alongside teachers and students to provide personalized, adaptive, and interactive support that meets diverse learning needs. Drawing on cognitive, constructivist, experiential, sociocultural, and distributed cognition theories, the presentation demonstrates how AI systems can facilitate differentiated instruction, manage classroom logistics, and offer real-time analytics and feedback. These capabilities enable teachers to reclaim valuable time to build stronger relationships, foster community, and focus on social-emotional learning that supports dynamic complementarity between academic success and personal development. The presentation emphasizes how AI agents and assistants empower teachers as relationship-builders, allowing them to focus on creating inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environments that honor students' cultural backgrounds and social contexts. By handling routine tasks, AI frees teachers to build community, improve school climate, and enhance students' social-emotional skills, which are critical for academic and personal growth. The integration of culturally relevant, responsive, sustaining, and sensitive pedagogies within AI teaming further ensures that AI technologies respect and reflect the diverse identities and experiences of students. Ultimately, AI teaming not only enhances instructional quality but also reinforces the human elements of teaching that are essential for fostering inclusive, student-centered learning environments where every student can thrive.

Higher ed friends: students are hit with a lot of rules, deadlines, and policies when classes started. Reminders don't mean they aren't taking college seriously. Your ADHD students will appreciate the reminders and I'm guessing they won't be the only ones.

Extend some grace these first few weeks!

If you're launching into a new semester soon or prepping for it, check out if you have any practices in your course that aren't so ADHD-friendly.

Multi-part questions, inconsistent deadlines, and other seemingly harmless choices can make a BIG difference for your ADHD students.

Graphic content: using mind mapping in class

In my mind, there are three great ways to use mind maps in the classroom: 1) mastering a lot of new information in an intro class; 2) going beyond rote learning; or 3) planning an essay, paper, project, or complex assignment, especially in a group

Templates need not crush creativity or box #ADHD students in. Make clear that they are a guide: an idea for those needing some structure and guidance, the ADHD minds with too many ideas.

What is always bad news is when a major deduction is given for some small aspect of the template that WAS required, but it's hidden in the small print or it's on the rubric but not the template. ADHD makes it harder to identify these tiny & inconsistent details.

It's 2024 and we're still doing laptop bans in classrooms, huh?

For the millionth time, technology bans are incredibly ableist. There's no discussion to be had.

Requiring disabled students to out themselves as disabled in order to use their technology in class makes you a poor educator.

Today, I'll be presenting a second paper at #ASEEannual. This paper summarizes lessons shared through The Grainger College of Engineering Lab & Design Community of Practice over the past three years. We hope it will help other instructors teaching undergraduate engineering laboratory courses. Stop by the @asee_nee Technical Session at 1:30 pm in E144 to learn more. If you can't make it check out the details here: https://go.engineering.illinois.edu/CoP24Paper
