In their article Stuber and Tischer discuss the importance of #patronage and patron-client relations for #earlymodern #diplomacy. After some general observations they discuss three different case studies: the perpetual Imperial diet, the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and the Swiss confederacy. Thereby they not only draw attention to geographical regions that often do not feature as prominently in studies on #emdiplomacy and client-patron relations, but they also take different forms of #emdiplomacy into account. When talking about Imperial diets as diplomatic spheres we have to differentiate between the non-permanent diets of the 16th c that were summoned by the Emperor and could last several months on the one hand and the perpetual diet that met permanently in Regensburg since 1663 on the other hand. We are well informed on Lauck’s journey to #Augsburg and his stay and activities at the #ImperialDiet in 1582 due to his diary, a unique source which provides insights not only in traveling activities as well as the work and duties of a princely representative at a diet. Moreover, we can take part of Lauck’s every day-life, thinking and perception of the world. For more information see:

During his employment as councillor, he also was sent on diplomatic missions. In addition to commissions that led him to neighbouring Imperial cities and duchies, he also was appointed envoy to the #Emperor in #Vienna and #Prague in 1577 and 1585 respectively. Moreover, he attended the Imperial Diets in #Regensburg and #Augsburg in 1576 and 1582 where he both times signed the final act, the so called #Reichsabschied, on behalf of the landgrave of Hesse-Marburg. Research generally focusses on #emdiplomacy on the Imperial level mainly at courts, while ignoring the intra-Imperial forms of diplomacy. With regard to the Imperial #diets this means, they are either regarded from an institutional perspective or with a focus on foreign actors who came to the diets to pursue their interests. However, Goetze argues that for the Imperial estates diets and meetings of the Kreise were central not only for discussing matters concerning the #HRE as a whole, but also for bilateral talks between the estates.

Ignoring the intra-Imperial aspects of #emdiplomacy leads to a simplified understanding of #emdiplomacy within in the context of the #HRE and in general. (5/7)

To understand #emdiplomacy in the #HRE on its different levels we need to know at least a tiny bit about the constitutional foundation which is, as Goetze puts it, like the “taming of the shrewd”.

According to the institutional structure of the #HRE one can identify three levels of #emdiplomacy: 1) the Imperial level 2) the level of the Reichskreise, that can be described as regional administrative groupings 3) the level of individual Imperial estates. (4/7)
