"44 countries have seen tenfold increases in at least 13 infectious diseases compared with levels observed before the pandemic. One idea they discuss, known as "immunity theft," proposes that an episode of acute COVID may leave people more susceptible to other infections"

How often pre-2020 did anyone who wasn't Clinically Extremely Vulnerable or otherwise severely immunocompromised die from a cold?
In #CraigFerguson's special "I'm So Happy", about 20 or 30% of the runtime is about "bonus content" to his 2 bouts of #CoVID. Various secondary infections (no surprise there) and he points out clearly: Harms your immune system.
To his credit, he finds some pretty good jokes even in that topic. But of course: lots of coughing in the audience and not a single mask in sight. The cognitive dissonance… 🤨
#Immunitytheft
"Demenz" dort ist allerdings falsch übersetzt, keine Sorge.

A relevant, fundamental question is probably: What exactly caused the lethal progressions in those early cases? Immune reaction like #CytokineStorm or the viral attack itself?
This Guardian story of health care professionals ignoring and dismissing the concerns of a mother about her sick child is sad & infuriating in all the usual ways.
While the writer stresses the HCW dismissal and denigration/gaslighting of the parent, the story misses or errs in some things.
1. This child appears to have died from the belated effects of COVID-19. There's "the doctor told them that he had Covid, and, while the fever went away after a week, the toddler never fully bounced back" and the HCW saying "Kids are not getting long Covid" and he had "an enlarged heart and blood clots on his liver" and he died of a pulmonary embolism (C19 causes clots ). Writer provides the evidence but underplays the role of Covid.
2. The writer (like many in mainstream media & HC) errs in saying "Although common, RSV was particularly virulent that year because it hadn’t been circulating as much during the lockdown years." RSV was particularly virulent because people's immune systems had been damaged by COVID. (Also, it's possible RSV mutated to become more severe--I recall seeing some evidence of this but cannot locate that now). As NNU notes, the "immunity debt" framing is wrong and dangerous.
I don't see a way to comment on the story, but maybe someone with a Guardian subscription can?
3. N.b., HCWs also gaslight & dismiss adult patients, not just parents of sick kids. (The AI summaries of Dr visits are not going to help.)
