Today I found out about Immers Space: a federated, open source "metaverse" application.

It looks super alpha, but I think it is pretty cool that it exists at all.

@Zach777 The problem isn't ActivityPub. The problem is Mastodon.

Again, my example: Lots of ActivityPub projects support bold type, italics, quotes, embedded images etc. etc. This is not ruled out by ActivityPub. In fact, this is supported by ActivityPub AFAIK.

Mastodon, on the other hand, can't do bold type, Mastodon can't do italics, Mastodon can't do quotes, Mastodon can't even render quotes when they come in from elsewhere, Mastodon can't render embedded images coming in from elsewhere, Mastodon can't handle more than four pictures etc.

This is not caused by technical limitations in the ActivityPub protocol. This is caused by a mixture of Mastodon's self-imposed identity, including which features Mastodon wants to have and which it doesn't, and technical limitations in Mastodon's own implementation of ActivityPub.

How is Mastodon supposed to render Flickr with hundreds of pictures if it can't even render a Friendica or Hubzilla post with five pictures?

If you want mobile Mastodon apps to render any website, whichever it may be, within a timeline as a toot, then first of all, half of Mastodon's backend would have to be re-written from scratch. The standard toot format would have to be redesigned in order to be able to do something as simple as embedding pictures in text. And I'm not talking about rendering every possible website with its full set of features yet.

Then Mastodon's various Web interfaces, i.e. what you'd see if you used Mastodon through a Web browser, would have to be entirely re-written from scratch. Then all desktop and mobile apps would have to be re-written from scratch.

This would also mean three more things.

One, anything post-rewrite would no longer be able to show toots from pre-rewrite because they'd be incompatible then. There would be a hard cut. Literally everyone would have to start over from zero.

Two, communication between Mastodon instances on the new, post-rewrite version and Mastodon instances which have yet to be upgraded would be as hazardous as communcation between Mastodon and Hubzilla is right now.

Three, you'd have the wailing of people who don't want Mastodon to get any new features all over the instances. People who absolutely do NOT want Mastodon to be able to render bold type, italics and other text formatting. But Mastodon would have to become able to render all that to do something as dead-simple as render a 1990s website.

By the way, all this would also require Mastodon's Web interfaces as well as all mobile Mastodon apps to be able to render Web-based #VirtualWorlds such as #MozillaHubs (#^https://hubs.mozilla.com/), Matrix-based #ThirdRoom (#^https://thirdroom.io/preview) or ActivityPub-based #ImmersSpace (#^https://github.com/immers-space/immers) as toots. Again, with their respective full sets of features and at the same frame rate as a desktop browser. After all, technically speaking, they're all websites.

Oh, and if one day even more advanced and sophisticated virtual worlds which have been in active daily use for many years introduce Web access, they, too, will have to be rendered by Mastodon and each one of its mobile apps as toots.

I know of #ImmersSpace and spoke to @datatitian at the time.
I am actually thinking now of implementing some kind of Fediverse groups system similar to Guppe Groups "external users can post" model, but with a page that lets you search back content. Been reading about how to implement the protocol yesterday.
