Last artwork from Amsterdam Light Festival: Vendel en de Wolf's Solid Void. Its inspiration has been neutrinos shooting all over the place, including through me and you (shivers). That sudden, accent movement is pretty well displayed in the artwork!

As an example of a brave decision to show not so fancy light art at a light festival: Abri Maximaal by Jop Vissers Vorstenbosch. It didn't blink, it wasn't tidy and it surely wasn't cute. What it it did do, to me, was to make me think about the context (once again). How would the piece be perceived, should it been displayed in a white cube gallery?

Amsterdam Light Festival was a canal cruise organisers' initiative and artworks were planned to be best seen from the boats. Today, I think walking or biking is the better option to see them, even though the cruise is very much fun in its own right. An exception to the rule this year was Xinyi Wang's Whale Fall; the boat gets you way closer than feet. The artwork profits of the close range examination, revealing its scale and dimensions, and the slow movement of the boat adds to its subtle dynamics.

Keep Me Warm by Thomas Bendiksen was probably the most modest artwork of Amsterdam Light Festival, so of course I loved it. A simple light thread covered heater on a roof of an old houseboat, glowing with (imagined) warmth made me go all OMG-it-uses-so-much-energy even though I knew it didn't. A healthy reaction, I'd say.

The climate change message of Antenna Sud by Michela Bonzi is easily understood, but among all the sadness, it is also quite a beautiful piece of art.

Lynne Leegte's Windows is a final example of insightfully site specific art, replicating Singel Church's windows behind it, bringing the facade in line with other buildings.

Making Waves by Jos Agasi & Noortje van den Eijnde was delightfully ascetic, trusting that glimmer of light is just enough. Which it is.

Seen at Amsterdam Light Festival 2025.

Zenisk's majestic The Sun glared over waters in Amsterdam Light Festival. It's a lo-tech replica of Sun, catching its main characteristics in lo-res and hi-impact.

Amsterdam Light Festival has gone through a change – for the better! I certainly didn't expect such a thought-of, clear, stylish and beautiful edition, but oh boy, was I glad to be surprised! Not every artwork was a people pleaser, there were even some artistic risks taken, which I appreciate. Bravi, curators Pam Toonen and Christopher Grabski!

For example this projection mapping Fracture Point by Philip Roca was not a most flashy one. But, and I say this rarely about mappings: I loved it. There was no wow effect, just exploration of the architecture, moving image in polyphony with the static structure.

I have a thing for lightartworks placed in wrong places. Luke Jerram's Mars in Bolton's library during the Put The Big Light On festival was definitely one of them. The weirdest contrast was the thing that made it all interesting.
