#ifIHadABillionDollars I would create an international non-profit financial platform for mutual aid, crowdfunding, and a marketplace, so we could move money around to support each other and the things we value without someone inserting themselves to skim profits or scrap data.
@scruss In the #ifihadabilliondollars I would put a ton into funding this kind of research in education.

Ok, #ifIHadABillionDollars is now my new fav hashtag.

The comments on this thread, have SO many ideas around community, housing, healthcare, education, creativity, and rest (so many ppl are so tired).

I've boosted a bunch, and will follow the tag and boost more as they come in.

Also check out, and add to, #spoonieTown - the imaginary place where we've fixed all the problems.

Thx for the #hopePunk & #solarPunk vibes, ya'll I needed that. 🥲

A friend was bemoaning (justly) we haven't been dreaming and imagining for a while. I think we've all been kinda head down surviving the winter and *waves hand at everything* But it's spring now, and time for hope to come back to life at least. Thusly I present a new tag: #ifIHadABillionDollars What would you do with a billion dollars? What would you build, create, solve, cultivate...? [social cue: this is not the place to rant politics, we've got the rest of the Internet for that]

@vlrny #IfIHadABillionDollars I would probably donate most of it to international charities, and then pay off all the remaining school lunch debts and medical debts for kids. And then I'd become a patron of the arts for schools in my area.
Need $500 to build the set for the new show? Covered.
Need new instruments for band? Done.
Scholarship fund for art camp? Totally

Oh and I'd tell my partner he can finally quit his job and focus on writing full time

@vlrny omg to start I would start a #MutualAid account for all my friends, build a cobb& clay / tiny house community where folks could request grants to build their own self-sustaining tiny house / cobb house with design & fabrication support from myself and the community. And buy back huge swaths of land to give back to indigenous people and re-establish 'the commons' , as well as a place to settle our tiny houses with fertile earth access for gardening... That's just to start.

@vlrny #IfIHadABillionDollars I'd like to buy a whole town and invite all my queer friends to live their - I'd open a free college so as to learn all the skills we'd need - trades and medicine and so on - we'd turn our gardens in to farms and grow and share our own food - and we'd have a lot of community events (bands, theatre, dances and so on) at town hall, and there'd be a library and a gym and workshops for everyone to use without fear of exclusion of judgement!! #spoonietown 🏳️‍⚧️🌈 👭 👬 🦄 ✨

- 10%: Endow 2 Science of Robotics programs, low pressure to write grant proposals / papers, plenty of time to think and polish their work. Ballpark about $1.2m/year for a prof + 2 students + lab, meaning an endowment of $50m each.
*Cost: $100m*

- 2%: Personal endowment for self and family expenses - pay off homes, cover educational expenses, moves, and medical care as needed. Ballpark $1m for the first year and $500k/year thereafter.
*Cost: $20m*

- 18%: Endowment for a slow learning academy (interest to cover wages and setup/operating expenses) - create a co-op virtual school run by and for people with energy-limiting disorders with evaluation and progress based on one-on-one student/tutor relationships but with remote learning tools and curricula based on skill trees with tiny, energy efficient modules.
*Cost: $180m*

-70%: Fund long covid (LC) research
(1) development and validation of a comprehensive metric for LC improvement that includes rest, exertion, and symptom severity
*Cost: $100m*
(2) Trial that establishes effectiveness of convalescence as LC intervention (so rest, relief from stressors and responsibilities, adequate care of patient and assurance that dependents are cared for).
*Cost: $300m*
(3) Modify Labrador Retriever in-home care robot and evaluate its effectiveness at pacing support using metric in (1).
*Cost: $300m*

There's a place I go walking most days, it used to be a working farm around the turn of the last century. Beautiful stone barns and buildings. The current owner, a private college, has allowed it to fall into disrepair.

#IfIHadABillionDollars I would purchase the property, refurbish all the buildings, and start a small working farm including a food forest, a school for traditional trades. I would have a little stone cottage right near the river.

A Bn can do a lot. There are some political things I'd do tactically, because a Bn is enough to be heard. A Bn is enough to make yourself a target of the right, the people who natter endlessly about paid protestors, which is worthy all by itself. A Bn buys a lot of lawyers. A lot lawyers allows you to give voice to a lot people who don't otherwise get a voice in our pay-to-play system of justice. A Bn just might be enough to get to the other side of The Day That It Happens.
