@MatthewTitus88 I was a theater usher for this at the small theater at the art museum and I remember the last hour just hearing people intermittently quietly crying in their seats

I like how despite being based on a novel by one of the most lyrical writers of the 20th century that this isn’t heavy handed on exposition or dialogue, and instead lets the scenes play out cinematically

We’re nowhere near the end of this story and things get keep getting more and more heartbreaking💔

“If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018) is based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name. The title is a reference to the 1916 W.C. Handy blues song "Beale Street Blues" (performed by Jelly Roll Morton here: https://youtu.be/MuMEXkmsZh4?si=mWa2jdTy9KYCzNaM). You can read it for free here (https://jm919846758.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/if-beale-street-could-talk.pdf)

I’m not 100% but I think this is the first time the c-word has been used on #MusComEnt 🎉

I first became aware of Colman Domingo when I saw in “Passing Strange” on PBS’s “Great Performances”. Between that and other 70s period stuff like “If Beale Street Could Talk” he as the opposite of “iPhone Face” to me

“If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018) was director Barry Jenkins’s follow up film after he won the Best Picture Oscar for “Moonlight”. This film would go on to win multiple awards (including an Oscar) for Regina King’s performance

Sorry for the late addition but I also found this on Kanopy this morning when it hadn’t previously been available on there

Agape – Nicholas Britell

This past drum corps season (2024, for those of you reading this further in the future), two groups performed the Nicholas Britell composition “Agape” in their shows. The song, originally written for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, is very haunting while uplifting, and its title’s meaning dates back to ancient Greece:

Agape (/ɑːˈɡɑːpeɪ, ˈɑːɡəˌpeɪ, ˈæɡə-/;[1] from Ancient Greek ἀγάπη (agápē)) is “the highest form of love, charity” and “the love of God for [human beings] and of [human beings] for God”. 1

While I loved how the Bluecoats and the Mandarins used Agape in their productions, I had not listened to the original composition until today. It stilled my mind as I could do nothing but listen to it. I hope it does the same for you.
