Nesrine Malik on Mamdani's success

"the term now means little that is universally agreed upon. Broadly, it has come to mean something derogatory, kind of in the same way that “wokeness” has. It increasingly has negative connotations: a political appeal to race or other markers of identity that is shallow, rooted in perpetual victimhood, focused only on representation and disconnected from material reality. Seen this way, identity politics is not about universal goals, such as lifting people out of poverty and so mobilising broad coalitions of voters, but simply about visibility"

Zohran Mamdani showed how it’s done: ‘identity politics’ can win elections

New York’s newly elected mayor rooted his campaign in the personal while, ironically, exemplifying the tradition of the American ‘melting pot’, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

The Guardian

"There’s nothing inherently wrong with diversity — teams, for instance, often work better together when there’s a diversity of thought or cultures which helps members see each other’s blind spots.

But Democratic progressives are quick to suggest that factors like race, gender, or sexual orientation should be used to boost candidates for important positions. While racial preferences in things like college admissions and jobs are deeply unpopular among most Americans, they are considered noncontroversial by many progressive elites.

Progressives are quick to say that considering race or gender for hiring or promoting someone does not mean you will get a less qualified candidate. And yet how many progressives did you see over the four years of Biden’s tenure who could just bluntly say that Jean-Pierre was bad at her job?"

Democrats Can Do Minorities a Favor By Not Excusing Incompetence

There are an endless number of qualified minority candidates for all sorts of positions. That's why we should stop excusing incompetence from people of all colors who are unqualified.

#SlamFrank... tramples sensitive taboos with its premise alone - a community #theater performs a #hiphop #musical about #AnneFrank and her family during their years hiding from the #Nazis. You are almost guaranteed some mid-show walkouts, which make a statement in a space small enough that the #actors will definitely notice.

The Franks and their plight are in no way the targets of this show’s derision. But Andrew Fox, who wrote the #music and #lyrics, and Joel Sinensky, who wrote the #book, do use Anne and her family to say some pointed, politically incendiary things about the sanctification of #identitypolitics, empty #progressivism, the logical endpoint of #tribalism, #victimhood as a permanent stance and egregious failures to learn the lessons of #history.

Inspired by a 2022 #Twitter debate over the “#whiteprivilege” of Anne Frank, who was 15 when she died in a concentration camp in 1945..."

‘Slam Frank,’ a Daring Satire, and ‘Crooked Cross’ Demand Our Attention

A gleefully provocative new musical and a quiet 1930s domestic drama speak to each other across time, resounding quite loudly in our present.

Politics isn't just about voting anymore. It shapes who we are, who we hang with, even daily choices. No wonder polarisation feels so personal. #USPol #IdentityPolitics #Politicisation

How everything became left or ...
How everything became left or right “coded”

It’s not your imagination — but the answer isn’t as simple as people dividing on politics.

A tool for integration or identity politics? Sweden's new list of cultural values sparks controversy.

'Pippi Longstocking,' Ikea, Bergman: In early September, Sweden's conservative government unveiled a list aimed at defining a 'common frame of reference' to promote the integration of foreigners.

The opposition has condemned the project's nostalgic vision.

Casual reminder that bigotry against white, able-bodied, cisgender, straight, christian men…

Is still unjustifiable bigotry!

No ifs, buts, and whens!

Judge people by their behavior (and remember to assume good faith until you have good reason not to!), not by their member-ship or non-membership in some group that may or may not be marginalized!

The notion of “this is typically male behavior” may for example in some instances even be true, but it is always a statement about
groups, not individuals and individual people deserve to be treated as such!

Whether behavior is good or bad is (with very few exceptions¹) a question that is independent of who engages in that behavior.

Anything else is
#IdentityPolitics, an incredibly harmful ideology that was largely pushed for by conservatives to undermine progressive causes, such as preventing Bernie Sanders as president of the US, largely because unlike Clinton he wasn’t a woman and therefore “worse”. (He wasn’t!)

And just because you are trying to anti-white “racism”, doesn’t meant that it is any less despicable, especially if it is indirectly racist against other groups as well.
A particularly outrageous example I remember was a lefty who proudly proclaimed that Obama was “a white man in a black skin” or something to that effect.
This is literally assigning character-traits to skin-color and claiming that showing certain behaviors makes you “not black”. WTF‽ Black people are just as capable of being arseholes as everyone else, including white people. Just look at how many of them voted for Trump!

Also: Be extremely careful about making assumptions into which of these categories people fall! Especially with trans people this might be
far from obvious!

¹ The most notable exception that comes to my mind would be using slurs, which is generally accepted to only be acceptable by the people described by it: I get to say “tranny”, cis people don’t!
