We like to pretend Agile and Flow are brand-new ideas.
But most of them have been around for years—just under different names.

I don’t reject older enterprise frameworks. I reinterpret them.
Turns out, they fit surprisingly well into lean, flow-first thinking.

Enterprise Architecture Meets Strategic Mapping

A Gentle Introduction to Wardley Mapping Most large organizations have invested heavily in tools like ArchiMate to model their IT landscapes. Whether you’re an enterprise architect, IT strategist, or digital transformation lead, chances are you already have a library of well-maintained models. The result? Beautiful, detailed diagrams that describe how systems, processes, and people interact. But while these models are useful, they’re also… a bit like framed pictures. They look nice. They’re static. And they don’t help you move.

“Your platform deploys in seconds. Great. But where does the actual work get managed?”

We’ve nailed delivery. But most teams can’t answer:
❓ What’s prioritized?
❓ Who decides what gets done?
❓ Where’s the documentation?

The case of the Governance Plane

The world we live in If your platform can spin up environments but can’t tell you what work to prioritize, is it really done? I’ve seen countless organizations go all-in on platform engineering — rolling out shiny tools, automating workflows, and deploying environments in seconds. But too often, the processes surrounding that automation get left behind. That’s why I’m a firm believer in a “two lane approach” when transforming organizations towards a more productive IT environment. Far too often, I have seen only technical implementation without considering the processes surrounding automation. On the other hand, only implementing something like the “spotify-model” for organizing teams doesn’t solve anything if it is not backed up by a supporting technology stack. So, from that perspective, Platform Engineering (for me) is both a technical thing (as supported by platformengineering.org) and an organisational thing (as described in Team Topologies).
