Im Rahmen des internationalen Tiefsee-Forschungsprogramms IODP3 nimmt derzeit ein Team der Institute für Geologie und Mikrobiologie der Universität Innsbruck an einer dreiwöchigen Expedition im Japan-Graben teil. An Bord des japanischen Forschungsschiffs Chikyu analysieren die Wissenschaftler:innen Sedimente tief unterhalb des Meeresbodens in über 7600 Meter Wassertiefe, um Spuren früherer Megabeben und die Aktivität von Mikroorganismen zu untersuchen.
