First steps agreed on plastics treaty after breakthrough at Paris talks

Delegates from 180 nations set out pathway to binding global agreement on tackling plastic pollution as soon as 2025

The Guardian

IPEN Co-Chair Dr. Tadesse Amera: “consequences of increasing plastic production will be disastrous for our health, the planet, & the climate. So the stakes are high… need for global controls on chemicals in #plastics and for limits on plastic production”

Chemical Threats to Health and Biodiversity Taking Center Stage in Plastics Treaty Talks - IPEN International Pollutants Elimination Network

As more science emerges on threats from toxic chemicals in plastics, Plastics Treaty talks enter a new phase centered on eliminating chemicals throughout

#inc2 is over. One step closer to a #PlasticTreaty . It has been an intense and good experience. So many things at stake with the plethora of interests and aspects. Now for the intersessional periode prior to #inc3. I feel so fortunate to share this work with the rest of @sciencecoalition.

Global Plastics Treaty #INC2 Outcomes:

*Delegates mandated the INC Secretariat to prepare a zero-draft of the treaty in advance of INC-3.
* INC3 scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya in November 2023, to work on a Zero draft.
* Committee welcomed offers to host INC-4 by Canada (Ottawa April 2024) and INC-5 by the Republic of Korea towards the end of 2024.

The options paper from INC2 will inform the ‘zero draft’, the text with legal language that will form the blueprint of the final treaty.

An important decision will be what kind of treaty: a treaty focused on global obligations, where every country needs to comply with an international set of standards (like the Montreal Protocol or Minamata Convention)? Or should it be a treaty that relies on nationally determined measures, where countries set their own goals and targets (like the Paris Agreement)?

I also focussed on Australia's role, which adopted a high ambition for a #GlobalPlasticsTreaty.

On avance !

"Hey Dad, we are famous. We are featured in this ABC News article today about public drinkng water fountains.

Too bad they did not include your comments about public water fountains reducing plastic waste, considering the #PlasticsCrisis we have and the current negotiations for #INC2 Global Plastics Treaty.

And they ignored the fact that more public water fountains is a climate adaptation enabling people to hydrate in public spaces during #heatwave events and extreme heat days that are becoming more common with global warming.

They also left out the Climate Action Merribek submission for more public drinking fountains in strip shopping centres around the municipality was accepted in the community budget ideas and funded to the tune of $50k by #Merribek Council.

I guess they couldn't include everything in the article....At least they included our names."

Should you be drinking water from a water bubbler? We ask the experts

Drinking taps, water fountains or bubblers; whatever you call them, there is a divide within the community over how hygienic they are to use.
