View Online: #LibraryOfThings – A Critical Component of #Libraries as Access Points to a #Local, #Resilient, and #SustainableFuture

16 March 2026

"The recording of #20 in #IFLA’s #Environment, #Sustainability and Libraries Section’s webinar series is now available below via YouTube and the slides are available on SlideShare.

Libraries lending beyond books exist all over the world but beyond that, libraries can be a disaster resource center, they can lend tools and items to try out before making an investment, they can offer events on how to #repair items—along with the tools required to do so. They serve as places where intergenerational groups connect over yard games and art activities. #LibrariesOfThings provide access to a wide range of items from gear for adventures to essential wellbeing tools. This webinar will share how to plug into this rapidly growing and increasingly connected system of Libraries of Things, both inside and outside the traditional library world, and discover how they can help you meet your goals.

About the Speaker:
#HazelOnsrud is a public librarian at #CurtisMemorialLibrary, who works on community programming and collection development, including an extensive library of things focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. She serves on the international Library of Things Mutual Aid Group, the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and the Steering Team of MECollab. She enjoys collaborating with good humans around the globe and was named a 2024 Library Journal Mover and Shaker and a 2025 New York Times Changemaker. Prior to her work as public librarian, Hazel co-founded the #MaineToolLibrary and spent a bunch of time learning from graceful teachers. In her free time, she likes to create things, eat molés and design #Gardens. "

Joint Statement on Open Science: Open Science as a pillar for strengthening the European Research Area. Opportunities and remaining barriers

This joint statement is issued by six major European organisations – ALLEA, EIFL, IFLA, LIBER, OPERAS, and SPARC Europe – representing thousands of European universities, research-performing organisations, libraries, scholarly infrastructures, and academies of sciences and humanities. In light of the consultation on the European Research Area (ERA) Act, it reflects on the current state of Open Science (OS). While significant policy progress has been made through the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (2021), European Council Conclusions in 2022 and 2023, national OS policies, and more, substantial challenges remain. Financial, linguistic, and geographic inequalities continue to limit equitable participation in and access to Open Science. This joint statement outlines what key remaining barriers require a coordinated approach. The ERA Act represents an important opportunity to accelerate progress through targeted legislative measures, but legislation alone will not be sufficient. Achieving Open Science will require the mobilisation of a diverse ecosystem of actors and complementary tools, including policy alignment, incentives, infrastructure, and community-led initiatives.

IFLA Guidelines for Green Libraries

These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for developing, managing, and evaluating green and sustainable libraries across diverse contexts. Grounded in principles of environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic viability, the publication outlines practical strategies for integrating sustainability into all aspects of library work. It addresses governance, staff training, operations, collections, services, legal and ethical considerations, and the planning and management of library buildings and equipment. Emphasis is placed on community engagement, accessibility and inclusion, efficient use of resources, and the responsible application of information and communications technology. The guidelines also highlight the role of libraries as exemplars and educators for sustainability within their communities. Through monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement, libraries are encouraged to align local actions with global sustainability goals. Case studies and best practices illustrate how libraries of varying sizes and resources can achieve meaningful environmental and social impact.

The long road to Marrakesh: 40 years of copyright obstruction to human rights and social justice

One of the little-known but extremely telling episodes in the history of modern copyright, discussed in Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available), concerns the Marrakesh Treaty. A post on the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) site from 2017 has a good summary of what the treaty is about, and why it is important:

It sets out exceptions and limits to copyright rules so that […]
