A Sustainable Internet: How to get there from here?

After a successful side meeting during the IETF 121 Dublin meeting, the new Sustainability and the Internet (SUSTAIN) Proposed Research Group will have its first meeting during IETF 122 Bangkok. You might be wondering, what is this Research Group about?

🕗 Roughtime is a draft protocol aimed at providing a secure way for any device to obtain time and to prove if a server has provided false time to that device. Read about the outcomes from the #Roughtime hackathon held at #IETF121

Securing Time for Any Device: Results From the Roughtime Hackathon at IETF 121

A Roughtime Hackathon at IETF 121 led by Netnod’s Technical Consultant, Marcus Dansarie, brought together developers and researchers to refine the protocol and its implementations. In this article, we summarise some of the outcomes from the hackathon.

Interesting thread about the recent #IETF121 meeting, reflecting on the mix of technology, people, and politics that connects the Internet standards, research, and open source communities https://social.finkhaeuser.de/@jens/113458740032374909

I kind of want to write up my #ietf121 experience, but I don't think what I would write will impart the meaning it has to me unless you are me, which most of you are not. I went there for #DNS reasons. I did not take part in all of the DNS related working groups, because I am at this time most interested in networking and figuring the organization out better. That includes specifically the people involved with DNS, of course, but not exclusively. Let's focus on DNS first. I'm glad the BoF...

Quite a bit of #bsky presence at #ietf121#DNS and such.
What a successful week at #IETF121. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-core-dns-over-coap/ and https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-core-coap-dtls-alpn/ are on track for Working Group (WG) Last Call (one step closer to becoming an RFC) and https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-lenders-dns-cbor/ is about to be adopted by the cbor WG. We even managed to streamline draft-lenders-dns-cbor more, so that name compression will be in line with Packed CBOR (so no extra expert review number assignment) and _still_ save some more bytes: https://github.com/anr-bmbf-pivot/draft-lenders-dns-cbor/pull/7.
DNS over CoAP (DoC)

This document defines a protocol for sending DNS messages over the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). These CoAP messages are protected by DTLS-Secured CoAP (CoAPS) or Object Security for Constrained RESTful Environments (OSCORE) to provide encrypted DNS message exchange for constrained devices in the Internet of Things (IoT).

End of #IETF121 and end of this long live-tooting. Fly safe back home and have a beer.

An Internet-Draft which talks a lot about Bluesky (boasting that it allows you to have your own domain name) and not mentioning the fediverse :-( https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-sheth-dns-integration/

Integration of DNS Domain Names into Application Environments: Motivations and Considerations

This document reviews the motivations and considerations for integrating DNS domain names into an application environment and provides terminology to establish a shared understanding of what a DNS integration may entail.
