Officials say an avalanche of garbage and debris buried or trapped workers at a landfill in the Philippines, killing one person, injuring a dozen and leaving 38 others missing. Thirteen people were rescued overnight, but one died on the way to the hospital. It's not clear if all the people affected were workers at the landfill. The Cebu mayor said rescue efforts for the others were continuing Friday. Relatives were waiting in anguish as the work continued. Landfills and open dumpsites have long been a source of safety and health concerns in many cities and towns in the Philippines, especially close to poor communities where residents scavenge for junk and leftover food in the heaps.
